Thomas, I've shot meteors from McGee Creek State Park in Oklahoma. It's a bit of a drive from Dallas but I'm pretty sure that you won't want to drive there from the Houston area. Still, it has pitch black skies to the easy and slight light pollution from Atoka to the west. The Milky Way is easily visible stretching across the sky.
