My concern is that they are putting restrictions on the airlines and passengers when, in fact, the problem should have been caught at the US embassies & sub-offices. The information was there and they did not act on it.
First, why was this person given a US Visa?

So I guess if you get sick they just want you to set in your seat and have an incident there, wonder how long it would take to change a seat cover out?

Maybe some one will start Bare Ass Airlines, you fly naked but the airline staff is in the RAW too! TSA doesn't have to worry about pat downs just checking luggage and carry on items.

But they would have to keep the planes warm!
This sounds like a brilliant business plan to me.

To add to the excellent post by the OP and to some of the equally excellent comments:

Some reported facts about events leading up to the incident -

The terrorist had quite a quantity of power sewn into his underpants and a syringe full of acid all of which went undetected despite the following additional circumstances -
His father had warned the US embassy about him on multiple occasions.
He paid for his ticket in cash.
He had no checked luggage (not unusual on a domestic flight, but more unusual on an international flight).
His visa renewal had been denied by the British for lying on his application.
He studied Arabic in Yemen!
His name appeared on at least one watch list; just not apparently the one used in airports!

The solution -

Passengers have to sit in their seats essentially doing absolutely nothing, with their hands visible at all times (no electronic devices, nothing under the seat in front of them, reading material - probably not, no blanket, no pillow).
And, no use of the restroom (better not drink any coffee)!
