Question Yosemite from Dallas? - 01-03-2010, 08:33 PM

What's the best (shortest) way to get to Yosemite from Dallas? I can fly into Oakland on Southwest and then rent a car. Are there any better suggestions?

The time I went.. we flew into Fresno. Which looks like it would be about an hour drive instead of 3hrs from Oakland..

Drive. Month there. Month back.

Back in the real world........

Fly to Reno? See the other side of the mountains. Mono Lake. The ghost town that Jeff and others go to and post here.

No thanks. I want to be enjoying nature and creating photographs... not driving accross the county... which I've done many times.

Yeah, but I'm not really interested in ghost towns and lakes. I really just want to spend all my time at Yosemite... hence the desire to get there the quickest way possible.

It looks like Fresno may be the ticket.

Conor: I've never been to Yosemite, Yellowstone, or any national parks for that matter. Actually, Yellowstone is national but I think Yosemite is a state park. Of course, I'm not checking it and can be wrong.

I would like to go to those places before Mexico takes over California and turns the entire place into a dump... like Mexico.

I don't have a month to drive all over the place so air transportation is really the only viable option.

Everybody should see Yosemite Valley in person at least once in their lifetime. But I actually prefer the Yosemite high country and Eastern Sierra to the valley. It truly is the Range of Light.

For Yosemite Valley, Fresno offers the quickest access of the available airports, and you'll have less traffic entering the park from the south, since all the west coast folks are coming into the west entrances.

Be sure to get a copy of this book.

fair enough. beautiful place, too many people.

yosemite is part of the nps, so bring your wallet. you may want to get a national parks pass ($80) depending on the fees at yosemite. it was $25/vehicle/day to get into bryce canyon in the winter.

For every national park I've been to, the per-vehicle fee was weekly, not daily.

hmmm...that may be correct. we've had a national parks pass the last 3 years. i remember it was weekly at grand canyon.

time to stop guessing. jeff is correct. $20/vehicle/7days.

living in texas, your national parks pass will most likely not pay it's self out, pending major trips to other parts of the country.

I didn't mean that in a negative way Wayne. I'm just a very busy individual and don't have the luxury of lots of extra time.
