Winter (or spring) Get-a-way - 01-05-2010, 10:14 AM

I'm looking to take the family on a winter vacation and seeking some advice and reccommendations on where to go, what to see, etc...

I have a few things that I need to keep in mind.

1. I have a 12 year old son, so I have to go when he's on break from school. (Spring break time... March 13th - March 21)

2. I'd prefer to make it a day drive (or less) from DAllas. Flying with the family to go on a winter vacation is far too much cost and hassle.

3. We have 2 small dogs we'd probably like to take with us, so I'm looking for a pet friendly hotel / condo / etc if possible.

Now, what I envision is a winter get-away. Not really needing a winter ski resort but possibly something that would allow for a snowmobile tour, sledding, tubing, ski or snowboarding would be a nice plus, but not required...

Ok, hope I'm not too picky... shoot me some ideas please!

Hey!! Thanks to all the amazing information I got here and a few other places-

Check out : VRBO.com - we stayed at an amazing home in Angelfire, NM and had a blast. You can see photos on my blog under the Thanksgiving post.

We drove - it was 7 hours - but it was well worth it for the time spent, and the cost savings...
