That first pic is NOT flattering, but the close-up/detail shots are interesting.

Rumors of crap kit lenses are greatly exaggerated.

I don't know about that... many of the kit lenses are slow to focus and much softer than an L Series lens. If you are comparing the two directly, I'd say the kit lens will lose in a landslide. This isn't to say that EVERY kit lens is crap, but I'd bet the majority are, especially being a regular user of L glass.

I think you may get a few kit lenses that are pretty decent as far as IQ go's, but the contrast and saturation seen in L-Line lenses is apparent even in thumbnail catalog viewing. They might accidentally assemble a kit lens that happens to be calibrated nicely to your camera and you could get sharper images than most kit lenses.
I know the Kit lens that came with my XTi was trash though. Looked like a P&S. After shooting with L-Glass for the first time I was blown away.

Show of hands:

How many people buy a kit lens and a corresponding L lens and compare the photos side by side? How much faster is ANY auto-focus compared to manual focus?

Doesn't happen. You use what you got and get the most out of it. In that light, kit lenses work fine.

That's always great to see, isn't it?
Srsly though, the chances of clients seeing it are slim. I use a template website and whenIi saw someone else using the same template I frowned.
