Anyone flown in the last few weeks? - 01-07-2010, 08:26 AM

Brit and I are about to head to Nashville on Saturday morning for Imaging USA, and we were going to bring one small carry on camera bag with my camera in it.

Have they become more strict in the last few weeks and should I expect to take everything out and make it operate at the security point? Or should I just leave it home?

Don't attempt to board the aircraft with a fuse sticking out of your zipper.

Take your stuff just like always. It might be a hassle, but as long as you don't have explosives or contraband you'll be OK.

Tell Brit........

Yeah, one of the guys that I know here at the office is leaving for Israel sometime today.
I asked him what he is going for... he said for KT (knowledge transfer) from a person that is leaving the company.
I asked what team they were on... he said the BOM team (bill of materials).
I told him to just be sure he didnt mention that while he was en-route.... LOL

I flew to VA Christmas day and back to Houston on the 30th. I carried a backpack with my camera and a laptop bag. On the way to VA they made me pull out my camera and laptop, but they did not turn either on. On the return, I just had to pull out my laptop.

I flew from Honolulu to Houston on January 2 and there were no major changes in screening I could see. They sent my camera and backpack through the machine and didn't make me open the camera bag at all. Onboard the plane there were no inspections of carry ons.

I have flown twice since Christmas.

You will see more of the magic wand use, meaning more "random selections of carry ons for the chemical swab testing". But to be honest, it really did not impede any more than usual.

Just remember to budget 60 min to go from ticket counter to gate and you will be fine.

You really wouldn't need that much time but for all of the travelers that seem to forget that you can't take that sams club litre bottle of shampoo in there carry on.

Well our flight leaves at 0830, but we are planning to be at the airport around 0630 just to be sure. We are flying Southwest so we'll be going to Dallas Love Field, which I dont think is as busy as DFW. I've only been to DLF once though.

Thanks Y'all!

I flew from DFW to Phoenix with a ton of gear in my ThinkTank Airport International, and I had no problems or holdups with security. They did run me through on of those puffer machines. Now that's a thrill!

Sounds like something that makes going 'commando' a little more fun....

Isn't that the truth! One would think that since it's been almost a decade since the security policies were changed, people would know the rules, or AT LEAST bother to try to understand what's expected before they get to the security checkpoint. These things are well publicized.

It's amazing to me that every single time I fly, there are those that don't have the slightest clue that they can't carry liquids onboard an aircraft -- and they are astonished that they must take their shoes off and get their laptop out. I REALLY admire the ones that hold up the line while they debate the issues with the TSA official who's only screened 4,763,983,629 people since the "new" rules wen't into affect.

But that's another topic...

On another note, Chris, you shouldn't have any trouble taking your camera equipment, especially flying domestic. They typically don't require removal of camera equipment. I've been asked once in the last 20 flights, to get a secondary screening because of all the electronic gear in my camera bag. The TSA official simply did a swab check on the zippers for explosives, and I was on my way in less than 1 minute.

Keep in mind that they mnight not let you store anything under the seats, as on my last flight. But I'm not sure if they're still enforcing that. Because they ran out of overhead bin room, some had to check their carry on bags.

Anyone see this lately on domestic flights?

Cool!

I dont understand the other issue either, and I dont fly that much to begin with. I can probably count on two hands how many times I've flown in my life. And even then, its only been on puddle jumpers from DFW to South Louisiana.

Flew out of IAH, DEN, LAX, and Minot ND / connecting in Minniapolis/St. Paul the last couple of weeks..... Did not see that happen on those flights, but like you I hear that its a possibility, time will tell.

Flying really is the modern equivelent to the Greyhound Bus, nothing really special about it any more. Just a means to an end. And for the record, I like the puddle jumpers best. Just gate check your roll on bag and collect it at the gang plank when you get off. Can't get easier than that.

Remember, no knives, liquids/gels must be less than 3.2 oz, and stored in a SINGLE 1 quart zip lock see through baggie. Take it our and put it in the bin with your shoes and jacket. Put laptop in seperate bin. Easy peasy..

Just flew from Houston to LA on southwest, there wasn't a single thing that changed... It seems the changes really only effected international flights coming into the US
