Question Car batteries? - 01-10-2010, 05:56 PM

It's been a very long time since I bought a car battery. I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX (2.4L). It seems this cold weather has taken its toll on my already weak battery. The past few days during the below freezing temps my car battery barely has enough juice to start the car.

I'm need some help from you car guys. What's a good replacement battery?

Thanks,
-Sonny

it depends on money. is just like buying a 2.8 lens to kit lens. how much do you want to spend. I have bought the altima batteries and are worth every penny, is uses some type of gel instead of acid like most batteries. But now i just buy the VatoZone batteries because of the warranties and is very close to the house. now if you really want to go cheap, you can go to the junk yard and you might get lucky and find a duralast, they sell used batteries for 10 to 20 bucks

I don't want a cheap battery. I want something that will last (with proper care) and is dependable.

Do you mean Optima instead of Altima? Altima is a name brand of laptop replacement batteries and of course a car.

The optima's are top-notch: they may be somewhat overkill for a passenger car: a lot of the design on them is for offroad applications and such: you'll be buying a lot of stuff you don't need. That being said, I for one will call them the best one around: I've got one that's seven years old in my Jeep and it's still going strong...

I have had good luck with Autozone batteries. Just replaced my wife's Honda battery with one. I have used them over the years and they have lasted longer than my vehicles.

I bought a store brand and it didn't last very long in my 97 Accord. My mechanic said that's a common issue and suggested I go with an Interstate battery, which I did. It's only been a few months so I can't tell you much about it's longevity, but my mechanic is trustworthy and I've been going to him for years.

any acid battery is pushing it's age after two years, the difference in price comes in for warranty replacement
i have an optima in jeep too but it shorted out after 3 years and expensive to replace
if the replacement peters i'll go auto zone next time

My last battery was AutoZone, about 18 months ago,, and doing just fine on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 6-if you do go this route it is worth getting their best line-mine has a gold/yellow top case.

I second the Optima! I had one in my last car. I replaced the stock battery at 3 years, when it was showing signs of dying - two to three years is about the limit of any regular car battery. I got the Optima, and the battery was still strong as an ox after using it for four years - at which time I sold the car. I bet it still had another couple years left in it.

I would've done an Optima for the wife's car when her stock battery died at 2 years in, but we had to get the first and only brand Wal-Mart had in stock at the time. It was late and they were the only place nearby, after getting a jump in a storm.

I say go Optima and you'll make your money back in the long run.

Gel batteries are typically used in situations where the battery will be tilted and you don't want a spill, such as offroad use and marine. I'd go for a good 60 month lead acid battery.
