Apparently one has to be vastly different and make stuff never before seen.

Full time employment, family, 401(k), etc. and being an artist are mutually exclusive.

Adams had a trust fund.

Weston was a starving artist.

Hmmm... must disagree here. It does make things more challenging, but I know of many who have done it. Now, they are not big-name, Art News people, but they do find time for making Art. And often even have a little income from it.

I over simplified I'm sure. I have trouble equating some of the photogrpahs I see to painters like Pollack. Pollack was so vastly different in the beginning. I see his work today and say "Right on!" Making the same leap of faith with photographs is difficult for me.

Adams' wife had the Gallery in Yosemite. Tough job, but somebody had to do it. It wasn't until a friend started marketing him in the 60s that the real money rolled in.

I thought the Adams family fortune was pretty much gone by the time he was an adult and married. He made quite a bit of his money from commercial work for Kodak, Polaroid, etc in the 50's and 60's.

I will double check that. But I thought that he did not have to do much.

I don't think money was ever an issue for him.

The Gallery concession was the cushion as well as the location of his rather extensive darkroom. The Great Fire (1930something) destroyed approx. 5,000 plates & negatives. He got gov't. money from time to time. The real money came along when he started doing endorsements. Workshops and print sales at his home helped toward the end when he wasn't shooting a lot. book sales must have helped. Although the Sierra Club may habve gotten the bulk of that income.
