I bet they wouldn't defend the deer so steadfastly if a couple of them attacked and mauled a child.

Yep -- and let them get into rut in an area that they become desensitized to humans and that is likely to happen.

It is funny (not funny ha-ha) that according to that one lady "They were here before we got here..." turns out not to be true at all.
