Question Fashion Workshops... - 01-20-2010, 07:17 PM

So I've seen workshops geared toward wedding stuff, workshops geared toward senior stuff, family stuff, kid stuff, and I've found a single one geared toward pets. But where is the fashion stuff?

Are there any photographers that put on fashion workshops?

Scott I'm figuring you'll know someone....

If someone know any answers to this I would love to find out. I love fashion shoots, any kind. My stepdaughter loves modeling and fashion shoots can be so creative and unique.
With dramatic lighting and makeup :) Sooo fun

I get e-mails about them from time to time, but they are usually in New York or L.A. and cost over $500.00 for a one day workshop.

Scott,

Since Leslie was so successful with her workshop, perhaps you should give it a try...

Christopher, you've unknowingly opened up a can-o-worms, and I'm going to pull out my soapbox and rant for a few lines... (this is not aimed at you or any one individual, so pardon my hijacking of your thread)
[rant on]
Believe it or not, I'm the one who started the whole "workshop by a member" thing here on TPF a few years ago. Feel free to check the archives and you can get the history of my first 'group workshop' (which failed due to a paid model no-show) and then the many successful ones that I did with Greg Daniels as my partner in crime. The reason I started these shoots was to give the opportunity of shooting with experienced models (whom were ALWAYS paid), quality MUAs, and an experienced posing and lighting photographer (Greg) to the membership. They were generally reasonable in cost (~$200 for a full day with multiple models) and given the feedback after the event, well received. It didn't take long for others to follow and offer their own versions. Some good, some not so good (IMHO judging from the photo output), mostly given by people with little or no professional experience. It's my personal wish not to be included with that group. In no way would I consider myself an expert or professional photographer worthy of charging people money to 'learn' from me. That's one of the main reasons why I stopped offering 'workshops'. The other reason is in order to do it properly, you need to invest tons of hours in preparation, organization, and finally a very long day running the darn thing.

Now that I have my own studio, I may consider offering some kind of group shoot or other activity to share my experience and network with other photographers, but it's doubtful that I will ever host another 'workshop'. That term, along with TFP, have left very sour tastes in my mouth...

I'll offer one more suggestion to anyone who wants to attend a 'workshop': Do you homework before you plunk down your hard earned cash. Talk to others that have attended prior events. Look at the photographic output done by the attendees. Look at their work before and after the event. Did they improve one bit? Add anything to their art or skill set? Or perhaps you just want to do it for fun and the experience. That's OK to, but let the buyer beware...
[rant off]

The above is my personal opinion and in no way should be considered the opinion of the TPF moderator staff or admin.

I feel you, and can understand your point. I think a lot of people go to workshops for a lot of different reasons. Some just want to attend so that they can come out shooting in the exact same manner as the host. And thats not my goal. And I dont want to pay XX amount of dollars just to have someone set up the lights for me and stick a paid model in front of them.

I want to learn 'what is a beauty dish, and whats the proper way to use it.' And I want to learn the basics of 'fashion lighting' and how it differs from normal lighting. I want to learn how to get that particular pose that you are looking for from your model. I want to learn the basics of fashion poses, as it clearly differs from portrait poses. I dont want to just learn how to shoot like Scott Watters.

And just a little side note.... I'd be happy to handle all the organization for you...

Depending on the group that is there, Rolando Gomez offers a kick-butt workshop. It is more geared to glamour than fashion, but the workshop is well worth the money.

While Rolando's workshops are fine if you want to shoot pretty girls in little or no clothing (I have attended one, and speak from experience), they are not what I would call 'fashion' related. Of course YMMV.

Honestly, there are several VERY generous forum members that a open to answering questions, explaining equipment and allowing tag-alongs to shoots with customers. I'd suggest looking around the forum for someone whos successfully doing the type of shots your wanting to learn to do and ask them if they'd be willing to answer question or let you tag along.

I would love to attend a Rolando workshop, but would not attend one that was glamor/nude based for the sake of my marriage. The boss doesn't like that. If Rolano did a non-nude/glamor workshop, I'd be all over it.

That said, Chris, check out Joe McNally's workshop schedule. I did a one-day in NYC last year and it was worth every dime. He also does week-long workshops.

Santa Fe Workshops and Maine Workshops are among the best in the country.

Workshops are kind of like lenses. You shouldn't skim on price, because the quality you get is the quality you get.
