Unbelievably annoying photographer - 01-20-2010, 11:55 PM

Tonight I went to a fund raising dinner for my son's Model United Nations team at NMSU. The featured speaker for the event was former ambassador to the UN Thomas Pickering, one of the most esteemed members of the US diplomatic corps and a fascinating speaker.

Ambassador Pickering's speech, however, was almost ruined by the damn photographer. This guy was walking around a large hall with concrete floors with a key ring attached to his belt that must have had at least 15 keys on it. The constant jangle from that key ring was annoying beyond belief! The guy had a Domke bag sitting in a corner with his monopod- why the heck didn't he put the keys in it? My girlfriend begged me not to approach the guy after the event and kindly remind him to put the keys away in the future and now I'm sorry my concern for her embarrassment kept me from confronting the bozo.

I couldn't believe this guy didn't realize how loud those keys were and how disruptive and disrespectful to both the speaker and the audience he was being.

Just had to rant a little I guess. Please, if any of you feel the need to wear a monstrous key ring with your suit- DON'T.

I would have said something ... I also have been to an event where a photog guy just didn't understand the meaning of "Please stop Smacking your gum" ...

Just look at it as constructive criticism ... since you didn't do it ... on another gig, that guy will be told by someone else about his jingle-jangle keys.

That rather sucks.

Should be one of the "tips" for photogs who are just getting in.

Have we not gone over how to act and dress as a professional before on this forum?
This is just one more example of how not to look and act professional.

They may not be the prettiest, but so well worth the money and VERY comfortable.

They do make some dressier ones. One of my 4 pair can pass for dress shoes. I forget the 'model', but I got them from onlineshoes.com. My gore-tex boots, not so much.

I think the consensus in one of the threads was I can wear flip-flops but not a logo shirt when meeting with clients.

Because I'm casual most of my life, I like to dress up when working for clients. My keys don't make any noise, either!

Jeff, if this event was at the university, was it a school employee who was the photographer? I'd write the organizers and just let them know how annoying it was and hope that they can educate the photographer before the next event. Chances are no one will ever know that this is a problem unless they are told.

I became very conscious of my dangling keys after an Indiana State Trooper informed me that his handcuffs would be put to use if said keys scraped the side of his new patrol car. Since then I have been very alert to there presence and always safely secure them elsewhere during a shoot.

I should have said something, and deeply regret not doing so. I'm sure the guy is so used to hearing the key ring it doesn't even register for him anymore but still- when it's the only sound in the room other than the speaker how do you _not_ notice?

My son and the other officers of the student organization went to lunch today with Ambassador Pickering and the 7 other former ambassadors who attended the event. Hopefully the photog wasn't there. :)
