There's a neat app out there for iPhone users: Pushme.to (and it's their website address).

It basically ads the ability for anyone to send you an IM to your iPhone, using Push tech instead of SMS. This can be done through their website or a widget you install on your website.

And if you know someone with an iPhone and this app, you can IM back and forth, just like texting, without the cost.

The app is about 99 cents right now.

I like it.

I have Textfree, which I used for a while until some people starting complaining that they never received my text messages. Ended up having something to do with Textfree's servers. I got tired of it and opted for the AT&T $5/200 message plan. That's really all I need anyway as I don't text that much. Personally, I think texting should be included in the $30/mo data plan, but they're not going to to that because texting fees are a cash cow for them.

I have my son's line on unlimited. Got a huge bill one month and said that's enough!

We have the unlimited family texting plan. It's $30 per month but that's for 5 lines... we've got pretty much unlimited everything on it. Still, I think our bill is only $210/month.

If you've got teenagers... unlimited texting plans are HIGHLY recommended!
