You can get a BGE for way less than that.

Most of them BGE, Grill Dome, Primo are well under 1K.

I wouldn't mind having one of those ceramic ones... but I gotta say that a $200 Webber Smokey Mountain does some very nice BBQ.

C!LLY,

There are a number of smoking related forums out there.
This one is kind of small, but has loads of recipes.

I have had a Cajun Cooker and a Brinkman. I was looking at the Weber when the Big Green Egg fever struck.

It's a lot more money, but worth it.

I can run mine anywhere between 275f - 750+f.

You can smoke, BBQ and grill. You can cook pizza, you can do anything that you do in the oven.

Two immediate benefits, No water pan, You can cook in very cold weather.

They also use way less charcoal. When you are done you can shut them down and save the remaining charcoal for the next time.

See, I have those already. I replaced the water pan with a clay flower pot bottom and it works great - better than the water actually. And I always seem to cook in very cold weather, including freezing nights which don't happen often.

I am sure that the full ceramic ones use less charcoal, but I usually only load it up once for about 10 hours worth of cooking and I can buy a ton (probably literally) of charcoal for the difference in price. Not saying I wouldn't rather have the BGE (or probably the Primo), but I don't see the price difference as worth it. I see the WSM as the better value.

But can your WSM also sear steaks and burgers at 500-700 degrees?

The thing that attracts me about the ceramic cookers is the versatility. Everybody I know who has one loves it.

What Jeff is saying is correct.

I have ruined a thermometer that went way past the 750f mark.

Now, I try to remember to remove it before a high temperature sear.
