Maytag Neptune Washing Machine Info! - 01-31-2010, 08:14 PM

Don't let Maytag tell you the bearings in a Neptune Washing Machine can't be replaced!

Have a Neptune Washer and Dryer that is 10 years old. The washer has been somewhat of a disappointment, and I have been glad that I bought the extended warranty originally. It has been repaired under the extended warranty several times with the motor, control boards and timer replaced.

Well there is no more warranty and the bearings in the tub are going out. Checked with Maytag and they tell me the bearings are not available as a separate part. (You have to buy the whole outer tub assembly that includes the bearings. Of course the cost is almost $500.00 plus labor Total estimate for the repair $900.00) The washer is not worth putting that much money into!!!

Thank goodness for the internet, Did a search and found that the bearings are available from your local bearing supplier and all the information on how to replace them is available online.

Total cost for bearings $23.00 and the new seal is $40.00. I am also going to replace the drain hose and front tub seal (since I have it apart anyway) so the total parts will cost around $100.00.

I know that Whirlpool has since bought Maytag, but not sure I would buy another set of Maytags.

With any luck I will have the machine back up and running like new by tomorrow afternoon.

Ditto on our Maytag Neptune!
Even though ours was new at the time (less than 1yr old) when we moved 2 years ago... we sold the washer with the house and bought a Kenmore Elite.
We kept the Neptune dryer and still like it.

The Neptune washing machine was the WORST! Those spinning disk things on the bottom of the were supposed to "be more gentler on clothing" than the traditional spindle style agitator, but I hated the fact that in the course of the wash cycle, it literally twisted the clothes up almost as if they were being wringed dry. Made a wrinkly mess of jeans, such that even a drying cycle couldnt get the wrinkles out and ended up having to iron virtually everything so that it was wearable.

Never going back to Maytag again.

Its so stinkin hard to tell anymore who owns what brands and what's made in the same factory...

Good luck on your repair!

FWIW: I got the same spill from Sears Service Center on the self-propel drive mechanism on my mower after it went out for the 2nd time. "we cant get parts for that any more..."; "what do you mean? it's only 2yrs old!"; "sorry, the system says we cant get the needed parts, only a complete assembly, and its 125.00."; "uh, no its not...at least for me!"

Got several recommendations to a mower and small enging repair shop over off of Pinemont / Antoine just past the florist shop. For 45.00 they not only had the parts, but did the repair (belt, pulley, shaft key and spring) and a tune up.

I had a warranty on our Neptune as well. The washer bit the dust a year or so ago and we still got a credit for about $400 I think. I have a top loader now. The Neptune dryer is still kicking. We had no problems with it.

When all was said and done, the Neptune was expensive and would have been way more so without the warranty. I'll bet we had 4 major service calls on it and several minor ones. I liked it, but as a Cadillac of washers it would have been a disappointment in the end, had it not been for that warranty.

We ended up giving our Netptune away and a bought a top load Kenmore. Much better equipment. I'm not sure that it was the Neptune as much as it had to do with being a front loader.
