Help! Make the d--- bird stop! - 02-05-2010, 08:44 AM

OK, I am finally can't stand it any more. We have this BIG either black bird or crow that comes and BEATS it's beak against the windows in our house. I run it from one window and it just makes a circle around the house pecking on ALL the windows. This is not a light little sound it is BIG. It just sits there beating it's beak. WHAT can I do to make it go away. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MORE THAN 6 months.
Any ideas on how to make it go away safely and legally?

Find something that will bother the bird. I used to listen to a guy who did a show about training dogs and cats. He suggested using a mixture of water, vegetable oil and cyan pepper. You mix it up and spray it on the area you want the animal to stay away from. The oil makes it stick, the water is to make it thin enough to put in a spray bottle and the cyan pepper hurts their nose. You are training them to stay away from the area with a smell that they don't like. I don't know what would work with birds, but there must be something they don't like that you could use.

A few other ideas are to get a water bottle and spray him every time he pecks or have your hose hooked up and do the same (would reach farther), put one of those large plastic owls in the window so it scares him off.

Put crow food in your neighbors yard.

[PETA members don't read any further ]
Get a pellet gun.

Seriously. It's not an endangered species or something. We are at the top of the food chain for a reason. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

^of course pellet guns and windows don't mix. even if you are the sharpest of shooters, a pellet gun is only so accurate.

when we lived in arizona my dad used this stuff called bird stop, it's a stick substance that you can apply where ever you have birds. they don't like it on their feet and learn not to come back.

Perhaps it's because I grew up in the country and was around guns my entire youth, but even as a pre-teen, I could hit what I was aiming at. Isn't this Texas? I thought that was the definition of gun control around these parts I'm not sure what pellet guns you've used, but the ones that I shot were high velocity and very accurate at less than 50'.

fair enough. i just know when i had my bird problem, i used a borrowed pellet gun to solve the issue. i could watch the pellet swirl as it made it's way to my problem. which leads me to believe it isn't high velocity. even carlos hathcock in his prime would have had trouble with this gun.

do as you please, i would suggest if you aren't handy with a rifle and hunted before, to avoid shooting at a bird near your window.

Get a rubber snake or inflatable snake.I used these all the time in my vegetable garden to keep the crows out of my tomatoes.

If I want to chase something out of my yard without killing it, I use a slingshot with marbles. Here's a video tutorial, in case you don't know how to use one.

For accuracy, I vote for the pellet gun.

For sheer childish enjoyment, I vote for the sling shot.

Thanks for all the ideas.
Owls don't work with this guy. I even saw him sitting next to one in my neighbors garden.
I just thought, take the gun and shoot through the window. It would almost be worth it. But I don't do stupid things like that with guns.....at least not yet.
I may have to try the sticky stuff. My problem is that the windows he chooses to peck on don't open, and are on the second floor. So it means getting on a 24 ft ladder. And moving it all around the house doing 6 windows that he likes to hang out pecking. I hope the sticky stuff lasts.
I have done the flapping my arms until they are tired. If I go outside he flies off and I never get to the hose.

OH I suck at a sling shot. We use to make them as kids. My Dad was great with them.

He's trying to sell you something. Put up a "No Solicitors" sign!

Get a pic of this guy if you can and then find out his natural predators. If an owl isn't it, maybe a snake (as mentioned).
