Unhappy desktop died (updated) - 02-12-2010, 01:20 PM

see last post for update.

Power went off last night unexpectadly.
Power came back on today while I was not at home.
When I got home and tried to fire up the desktop,, NADA..
NO indication that it is getting any power.
I've tried several outlets with the same (nothing) results.

It's probably obvious, but does anyone have any ray of hope for a repair? $$$

Dell Dimension 2350 ( kind of a dinosaur ).

Should I attempt a repair?
junk it and go with new system? I'd have to get a PC on the cheap.
wait for new technology?

I'm not a techie and don't want to become one.
I've managed to connect my laptop to the net and will live with it for the
time being.

God I hate to have to try to replicate the system I've been using for many years. Got programs on there that I have no idea where the disc is.

usage is about 70% internet, 30% photoshop and other photo manipulation programs.

Get a new one.
We had to do that a while back.
Actually some of the 17 inch notebooks make a good desk top replacement and, if you have to, you can move it around.

I like HP's, Toshiba's, and Dell's.
Good luck.

First thing I would look for is a fuse on the back of the computer near the power supply. Should look like a very small battery compartment. Check/replace the fuse first.

Without knowing all the details of your system its hard to really say what options you have, but here are a couple that might be viable.

If its just not coming on at all, perhaps its just the power supply that died. But additional bad news could be that if the spike was bad enough to kill the power supply, it may have harmed the mother board as well. If you can get a replacement P/S for not too much coin, I'd try that first.

If the M/B is toast, best case scenario will be if the hard drive is ok and you can pull it and use an external reader to hook it up to a working computer and pull the data off of it. That won't salvage any programs, but if you had docs, pics, etc, you can get those off.

Further, if the hard drive is found to be ok, perhaps you can find a refurb 2350 for cheap and swap the hard drive.

Personally, I'd go for salvaging the data from the hard drive and get a new system.

I'm with John on this one. See what you can save if it is the powersupply, it is easy pezzey.

You can get a pretty strong power supply for around $60... if you don't mind bruised knuckles it's not hard to do your self and all you need is a phillips screw driver usually. just keep track of how many wires are going out of your old power supply and where they go and put the same ones back with the new supply. You'll have two big fat ones going to the motherboard, plus the mini plugs for the fan(s), and the normal one for the hard drives and other things.

check the fuse, then might want to just check/replace power supply. Those for that particular model went out constantly with power spikes.

If none of that works, then pull the HD from it, get a new system, pull the drive, swap and a few tweaks, some drivers and you would be back in business.

yeah, check the fuse on the power supply. even if the power supply is dead, they're cheap to replace....if thats the avenue you want to take.

Being a PC if this is in fact a power supply issue, he can go to any store from Fry's to Best Buy, or newegg.com and buy one. How would you fix this if it were a mac?
