Help! Ebay shipping overseas question? - 02-14-2010, 08:47 AM

I am selling a camera on Ebay and I am getting a lot of questions asking if I willship to Australia, Israel and Romania. Is there any reason not to if I get paid first and they pay the cost? Please help!

Man just reading this makes my blood boil. Two weeks ago a guy from Australia begged me to let him bid on my item (Ebay). I agreed as he had decent feedback. Long story short the hassle involved with this transaction and the cost were simply not worth it. I ended up eating $200 in shipping - it sucked.

You have to deal with paperwork for customs, extra packing to make sure the item stays intact, and the cost of shipping is high.

I'll never sell an item to anybody beyond the US and Canada. YMMV

After you get paid may be the key. I review a lot of cyber-fraud issues in banking. From them sending you a cashiers check that over-pays you to getting your account number, there is a lot of fraud out there. If you get a check, give it a lot of time to clear. By the time the paying bank gets it and sends it back as a fraudulent return and your bank takes all the funds out of your account, weeks can go by and your bank will have released the funds to you long before. (You getting the funds doesn't mean the check was good.)

Maybe if you know the shipping costs in advance and have them Western Union the money to you, then you'd have good funds and they'd eat whatever costs you charged them for.

I've shipped stuff all over the world, and have never had a problem. Yes, the shipping costs are high, but they can be calculated at USPS's website, and the customs forms can also be filled out online. The buyers pay the shipping and if they're willing to do it, I say let 'em. Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference on the part of the seller, tho.

Thanks all.

I am glad a US buyer won the auction!

Danger Will Robinson, Danger! 99 and 44/100% of these are scams. I had to reset my EBay account noting that I'd only sell to US residents only.

It's easy if you do it right. Package the item go to the post office and weigh it. Now go to usps.com and check shipping cost to the country based on weight. Only ship Priority or Express (never ship first class airmail) with insurance and tracking. YOU need these. Add these costs to the shipping cost and then let the person know total. He probably won't like the cost (upwards of $40+++shipping) but you are now protected. DO NOT declare a lesser value on the customs declaration otherwise if it gets lost the buyer looses money and you could face legal action for making a false claim on the form since you insured it for the total..

FALSE!!!!!!!!!

I've sold many items over the last 11 years to overseas buyers on eBay with not even one being a scam.

The only person who tried to scam me on eBay was a USA buyer...
