Cool A lot of Big glass at the Olympics - 02-18-2010, 05:59 PM

Was watching one of the speed skating events and NBC's camera showed a photo pit at the venue and there were about 20 shooters with 300mm 2.8's on monopods in that pit trying to get their shot.

NBC has been showing a lot of getty images during their shows, some really great work.

Have not seen too many other photo pits out there or lone photogs on the mountains in the cross country races-guess they are there and not all at the finish lines.

Been a pretty good Olympics so far.

I don't know that a 300/2.8 is really 'big' by Olympic standards...

There are 4 or 5 students from my school(Brooks Institute) covering the olympics this year for New Sport Photo Agency. They are getting some really amazing imagery. They happen to have a collective blog going at
NewSport Photo Agency

They are all from the group I went with the cover the Senior Olympics.

The summer Olympics had all kids of info on the shooters there, packing, being there, etc. I've seen next to nothing for this.

Maybe Canada has stricter polices than China on releasing info.

I was thinking that I was a few 400 f/2.8's during snowboarding, which would seem a little like overkill. The photogs along the top of the half-pipe had pretty good position to use something smaller.

I've seen alot of 600's after the races on the mountains, and at the time I have seen them they are almost always leaned up against the wall while the photog uses a wide to get reactions.

Speaking of overkill, the guys at the sliding center bottom had some very long glass for what seemed like was a very short throw to the corner (although they might have access to another view given the final turn)

I noticed a lot of 70/80-200's yesterday in the ice dancing/skating arena- guess the 300's were too long for full body shots for the men's finals.

Some of the guys shooting the half pipe have been right in the middle of the thing where they had to use short glass to get their shots. The NBC/Network camera guys have been righr on top of that venue big time.

What I don't get is why they give arm bands for the winter Olympics, but hot clunky sweaty full vests for the summer games.
