There are several prairie dog communities around that are cool to sit and watch for a while. Right now every thing is pretty bare, with most of the fields being empty getting ready for the spring planting season. There are lots of small towns around the area that are great for getting some interesting shots as well.

As for things to see and do, the depot district has some great brick lined streets, and semi active nightlife. The ranching and heritage museum is pretty cool, as is the windmill museum (with one of the few if not the only remaining double headed windmills still in operation)

The entire yellow house canyon is fairly scenic (in a rugged sort of way) east of town.

There are a few wineries in the area that are good to visit.

If you'd like -- you are welcome to PM or call me when you get up this way and I'll be glad to give you directions to some of the places, etc.

You should also plan on at least having a look at the Texas Tech campus as the old styl spanish architecture is fairly unique for a college campus.

Beyond those -- as Don stated there is a lot of really really wide open sky, which on the right evening can provide some incredible vistas of sunset.

Really -- Lubbock is a great place to live, but I am not sure I would want to visit.

Shoot Lubbock in your rearview mirror. At night. You can see the glow for about 100 miles. Thank Mac Davis for the song.

Palo Duro Canyon.

Are you driving? Where is the giant cross? Is it on the way? Look for grain elevators along the way.

If I had to go to Lubbock again I might just shoot myself.

I didn't want to say it. A friend of mine says that all time.

Wow sounds like this is going to be an interesting trip....and a long one. A 6 hour drive there...then a few hours looking around and a 5 hours drive back.

Don can I borrow your gun? lol jk.

Thanks for the suggestions though...I should be able to find SOMETHING to shoot besides myself!

They do have a hill...sort of...I think...not sure. It's been about ten years since I was there. It may have blown away by now.

Jere....there is a hole in the ground outside of LBB called Buffalo Springs Lake and Ransom Canyon....on the SE side of town....really cool shots...and a lot of cool architectural buildings...

Between 4th and 19th street east of Univerisity...there is a lot of interesting buisnesses..and older homes that have been turned into frat houses....

45mins north of Lubbock you have Palo Duro Canyon state park..very cool to visit...

Also on the way to Lubbock you will have several opportunities to take shots...don't limit yourself to the 6 hour drive...add about 3 or 4 more and you will find some interesting places to shoot...also around the cap-rock could be fun too...

Looks like over the next ten days you should have some good weather....but really like everyone said...it's flat...it's brown...and it's in the middle of nowhere...!!!

Have fun...

If you come out this way or go back via Crosbyton, Benjamin, Dickens, etc you will pass through the headquarters for the 6666 Ranch. Pretty cool drive and not much out of the way coming from Ft Worth.

Palo Duro is quite a bit further north than 45 minutes - closer to 2 hours away and not really scenic from the roads if you are pressed for time.

Being that you are only going to be here for a few hours, I would suggest staying close to the Tech area, specifically the Ranching and Heritage museum as well as the Campus itself. There are a group of probably 75 to 100 Jackrabbits that call the Ranching and Heritage center home, and in the right light they can be gorgeous.

Buddy Holly is buried in the city of Lubbock Cemetary as well.

If The Strip is still active outside of town, that's a fun photo opp. Now that beer and wine is sold in town, don't know how well the on-the-fringe liquor stores are doing. It's off the loop somewhere, haven't been back there in years.

Worked for the Lubbock paper for exactly a year, but I didn't leave empty-handed. I met my wife there! I went back once on business, but she hasn't darkened the city limits since 1998!

Ya know I want to stand up and say Hey Lubbock isn't that bad but really I can't think of any reason to defend the remarks! ROFL
