Since I'm in Houston, I have to go across I-10. I always stop at Cafe des Amis in Breaux Bridge. Love the food and love the building, exterior and interior. Take your camera inside with you. They are used to people taking pictures in there.

Cafe Des Amis

The bridge itself is a pretty interesting photo op.

Be careful going across the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, between Breaux Bridge and Baton Rouge. I'm not sure what the speed limit is there now (60 mph last time I did it, I think), but it is pretty heavily patrolled by LSP. I just move over to the right hand lane, set my cruise control to the speed limit, watch people pass me, and then wave to them on down the road when LSP gets them. It's less than 20 miles long, and you can stand doing the speed limit for that short amount of time. Besides, I think it is one of the great engineering feats in the world, and I just drive along and marvel at how they ever built it. Also, whoever is riding shotgun can get some pretty neat pictures going over it.

Don't take 49 take the old highway 1 for an adventure!!

As to the bathroom stop comment, yeah there are long stretches of 49 that have nothing but you can get off at most any town and find a DQ or other place to stop with clean restrooms.

If it's your first trip down and you do have to time stay off of 49 unless you just have to be there fast.

I always stop in Shreveport at a Casino for about a 20 minute break- little gambling, bathroom, grab a drink and also topping off the gas tank.

Have taken this trip probably 30 times in the last 25 years and several times before that and the old Highway 1 south of Shreveport is a nice drive for photo ops and not that much slower than 49 now that most traffic is on I-49.

Also agree with staying off of I-10.

Janice,

Wylie-Emory-Quitman-Gilmer-Dianah-Marshall-Carthage-Logansport-Mansfield-I49 is a nice diversion.

PM me the dates. Y'all are welcome to stop at the house. Yes, we wish we could tag along.

Chris, I've been an adopted Cajun longer than you've been alive.
