Ok in just seven short weeks we leave from Dallas on our first trip to NOLA. Since everyone said in another thread that they only spoke about NOLA, not the trip there.

Drove from West Ft. Worth via the DFW airport freeway all the way to the Parking Spot where we boarded a small shuttle and were given a ride to the terminal.
Upon arrival at the terminal we went through security, boarded an airplane and had one free Diet Coke.
Upon arrival in NOLA we hired a car to transport us to our hotel. Now we need to start another thread about what to do while in NOLA. ( oops, too late ).

When I've gone from here, I've taken I20 to Shreveport and hung a right.. lot of open land until you get to Alexandria (not many stops for food or other needs).. and then open land again until you get to Lafayette.. then hang a left toward Baton Rouge and NOLA. A lot of that part of the highway is elevated road above swamp.. so again, no place to stop.
All in all, long, boring drive... lots of trees and swamps, especially as you get farther south in the state.

Y'all don't know nuthin.
How many days do you want to spend driving/photographing to/from New Orleans?
1. Avoid interstate highways.
2. Take Hwy 90 from Lafayette to N.O.
3. Natchitoches is worth a stop. My spelling is terrible.
4. Logansport, LA is worth a stop.
I could go on forever. PM me.

Of course, we've got different "challenges" from Houston than you do up there, but we've just gotten to the point of hopping on a plane instead of driving: it ends up being a wash between gas, parking, and pain in the butt time... Pnce you get to NOLA the streetcars, etc. make it pretty easy to get around to the major places we end up going, and it's just not worth taking a car.
That being said, I spent a lot of time down in south LA some time ago: while the US-90 "loop" can present a lot of photo opportunities for lack of a better term, it takes a long freakin' time, and most of the REAL good stuff is a long way off the beaten path.. Just depends on whether you want a trip to NOLA or if you want to take all the time to do the "tour"...

Depending on what the Bozos are doing on I-10, Hwy 90 from Lafayette to N.O. is A) Quicker, B) Same, C) Slightly slower.

There is tons of ways to get there. My wife is from Alexandria and I spent 10 years there so have been to and from many, many times. My best drive is always through East Texas and there are many ways to go that way also. Sometimes we go throught Huntsville over to Lesville(SP) and cut over to 49 that way of just go south. Lots of times we go through Nacadoghes(SP) over to Many and to 49 that way. If you aren't any a hurry get on Map quest and map your own route. I really like going through the National Forest and cutting through the Indian Reservation. Just way to many beautiful ways to go besides the interstates.

REAL Cajuns know that anything north of I-10 is NOT Louisiana... its either East Texas or Southern Arkansas.

I could go on forever. PM me. | My goal is sunrise between Marshall and Shreveport and I figure that the trip starts (slow down and enjoy) about Natchitoches. Everything before that is a daytrip for us. I agree with Hwy 90 to N.O. I expect that we will take a few day trips out of N.O. that will be about 3 hours away or less. We can take as much or as little time OR put it on a list to go back to.
You know you could just go with us. We could stop and pick up your wife :) | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
