Camp Allen - 02-22-2010, 12:04 PM

My son really wants to go to Camp Allen this summer - I have never sent him anywhere alone. He is 11 and old enough - but will I survive it. Does anyone have any good Camp Allen advice to share?

The only suggestion I can offer is wherever you send him, don't send him to Camp Crystal Lake!

You will survive, but you may not believe how much he has changed in such a short period of time.

I don't know anything about that camp in particular, but my one tip for sending a boy off to camp is to stock up on cheap t-shirts and shorts, towels, etc. that you don't care whether you get back or not. When our son was that age, I could not believe the ground-in, permanent dirt that came home with him from camp. And, they really love camp at that age - don't let the huge teardrops that might fall when the bus actually starts to load him up to head out be a reason for him to cancel at the last second (and I'm speaking of the ones that, despite however brave a front he puts on, may fall from his eyes - not yours - yours are a given, but just hide it till you are alone in your car). Once they get there and get busy, they have such a blast and all thoughts of calling home for you to come and get them go out the window.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about that camp, but my daughter went off to Waldemar when she was 7. We were in Dallas, and she went on a bus with all the Waldemar kids. I still can't believe I let her do that, but she loved it! The parents get to pick them up at the end of the week (it's near Kerrville), and they have a big ceremony. I'm sure he will have a blast! She ended up going to other camps, but they were just day camps.
