Just Lost My Job - 03-02-2010, 05:56 PM

April 17 would have been my 10-year anniversary with the company, but my supervisor and H.R. officer informed me today that they were letting me go. So, I thought I'd take the rest of the afternoon off and just goof around (after filing for U.I., of course).

So, how about that Congressman who is holding up U.I. benefits? What's up with that?

First off, losing your job sucks immensely and I'm sorry to hear it.
Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky won't affect your U.I. because you are just starting the procedure. He's holding up the extra extended benefits that congress wants passed for those whose benefits have completely run out and still don't have work.
It may however affect your ability to get COBRA health insurance coverage, which means you may suddenly be uninsured.

He's a senator from KY...and he's apparently seen Network and is acting out the starring role....he's mad as h-e-l-l and he's not going to take it anymore (well, that's my non-political interpretation fit for posting on line, anyway). I'm sorry you lost your job and so close to 10 years definitely hurts. I hope you will find the right situation quickly. What kind of work do you do (or do you want to do)? Always good to have people on the lookout for you.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the consolation and the information. I wondered if that Senator was going to affect me; the TXW website said the extended benefits expired Feb 27 because of him, so that would just be a fix if I got fired the next day!

I don't really know exactly what kind of work I'd like to do. I'd like to manage my own business. I'd like to travel to exotic locations and play with high tech gear. I like performing research. I'd like to do what Virgin Galactic is supposed to do. But, for the last 10 years, I've been just a cubicle monkey, hitting the keys on the keyboard that my handlers tell me to hit. My job title for about the last 8 years is something like "Logistics Coordinator," but I worked on a computer help desk prior to that. I also have a 17 year-old Associate's Degree in Applied Science for Laser Electro-Optic Technology.

Sorry to hear that, Richard. Hopefully it will be a door to something better.

As far as I know he was holding up the extension becuase there is no way to pay for it, to simplify it wont help anybody's comprehension of the situation.
It would be good idea to get the facts before forming an opinion about being denied benefits because one indevidual is /was holding up the bill.
Sorry about the job loss but as they say one door shuts and another opens.

Sorry to hear about your newly-unemployed state. Don't know if it will help but here's a link I've been keeping ready for a while just in case. Obviously not new but a handy list.

Do you spend money you don't have even if it's for something you feel is important. That is what's up. Many individuals and families have to weight the consequences of this decision. We as a country are grappling with it too. Bunning has made his thoughts clear and so have others. ...and so it goes. A fair debate for a political forum.

Once, my wife and I lost our jobs on the very same day. We went to McDonalds and got drunk on junk food.

Sorry about your layoff; even more so that it comes right before your 10yr anniversary with the company. That's really a gut punch.

I wish you luck in finding something better.
