Talking Ten year mark is apparently not good... Laid off... *sheesh* - 03-03-2010, 03:47 PM

Got a call from the head guy of the company I've worked for for... just one month shy of 10 years... giving me my walking papers.

I stepped down into a part time position about a month ago because our accounts have been HORRID! I mean, really REALLY bad... and my job is national account based...the benefit of not being required to go out and 'kill what you eat' kind of situation... I'm bubbly & friendly...and they liked me handling national account clients...

But I'm the only person in Texas....the other 2 moved back to corporate...so today I experienced something I haven't ever experienced in 20 years of employment... I actually got fired... although I think 'laid off' is a better description... he said 'let go'...

Fortunately I bleed green... so I quickly threw together something I'd been considering a while back... and formulated a plan to offer my specific set of services to a group of local individuals that I worked with through my previous employer on a part-time/temp basis.

I love what I do...but HATE working from home... it's like living in a darned fishbowl... for some people... it's ideal... I am NOT that person...

We'll see how it goes... but I thought it was kind of... nah.. not 'kind of'... I thought it was freaking HILARIOUS...

Sorry to hear that, Donna, but everything happens for a reason, and it sounds like you already have something better lined up. Maybe this was the kick start you needed. Keep your head up, which you are obviously doing, and things will be even better for you!

Hang in there, Donna. Please keep up your spirits and good chances are that the alternatives you work yourself into will prove to be a great positive change. You'll find ways to get over the "fishbowl" syndrome of working from home. You are a gem of a person from the brief interaction I have had with you and only good things can be in store.

You've got a great attitude.

I've been working from home for about 5 years. The toughest thing for me was to figure out how to deal with all of the distractions that home has. I still haven't mastered that (kind of like now) but I love working from home.

I hope this isn't the beginning of the recession that I keep hearing about...

Sorry to hear that Donna!

FWIW...The same thing just happened to an accountant friend of mine. He worked for a US plastic products manufacturing company, and the foreign competition, using cheap baby labor, has all but put them out of business!

I think it's a specific area of the market I'm in, because a couple of the 'local' people that I work with are booked several months out...so it's not the local market that is the issue...we have 5 'other' national offices...all in areas that are being hit pretty hard compared to Houston.

My 10 years at NASA is this October, which is when our FY2010 funding ends and CxP may shut down. I hope the 10 year curse doesn't continue!

My company recently sold to another large company and the guy in the office next to me was let go after 9 years, others too were let go and they have been there even longer. It's so sad to see so many people that I have worked with for so many years being let go.

Those of us that work from home in the Katy area ought to get together periodically on Fridays and pretend like it is lunch out of the office - - at least then we would see other people... I sit at this desk 9-10 hrs a day - - If I didn't go out for a walk at the end of the day, I would never even see the sun...

I hope you are successful in your venture...
