My bank pays 4% on checking accounts up to $50K. To qualify you must have at least one monthly direct deposit, you must use your debit card 10 times a month, and you must go online once a moth and view you account statement. Those were all things that I did anyway. If you have more than $50K you could open a second account.

* The 4.01% APY* rate is paid on amounts up to and including $50,000**
* 1.01% APY* for amounts over $50,000**
* If monthly qualifications** aren't met, you still earn 0.10% APY*
* No minimum balance required
* No monthly service charge
* Free StarNet Online Banking
* Unlimited check writing
* Free StarCard Debit Card
* Free StarEZ Bill Pay
* Direct Deposit available
* Free e-Statements required
* Free Telebanking
* FDIC Insured

What bank? That sounds like a great deal. Except for going online once a moth part. I don't know if I'll ever become a moth. Hopefully you will still tell me after the bad joke. :)

It's Northstar Bank of Texas. Ten offices mostly in Denton County.

https://www.nstarbank.com/index.html

Spellcheck doesn't work if the misspelled word is still a word.

Why a CD? There are a LOT better investment vehciles out there. Do you just need the cash avaliable to you? If not, there is a lady in my office that averaged ovre 30% in 2009 on her portfollio, and you dont have to have 6 figures to invest.

Hey, if I knew what her investment plan was I would probably follow her lead. But since I have no idea what she is doing I can't do it. There are many, many people out there who have great financial minds, and then there are those who invest and get big gains and then lose everything. I'm just looking for a safe way to get a decent return on the little money that I've got saved up. CDs just seem to be one of the safest to me right now. I am no financial wizard by any stretch of the imagination.

And then there is that 40-50% drop most everybody experienced not too long ago.

And, if you bought certain index funds at the right time in 2009, you could have realized roughtly 60%. 30% in 2009, standing alone, is not all that good.

I'm like Don: Skip the CDs and check your bank for interest earning checking. Especially look at Credit Unions near you. Ours is paying a nice 3.01%, and unlike a CD, the money is not locked up for a year and we can access in an emergency.

First Community Credit Union (there's a branch in Sugar Land that I just opened my photo business checking account at also).
https://www.fccu.org/

Looks like the rate is 3.01% now (I'll go back and edit the previous post for that new rate).

They have great service - I've had a personal account with them for about 12 years, and now a new business account. Free business checking (some conditions) with a free pack of stuff to get you started (like checks, endorsement stamp, etc).
