Camera shy?

A strange thing happened to me yesterday - I took my camera into a restaurant since I don't like leaving it in the car. It's a gripped Canon 7D with a 24-105L and the 580 strobe. It's a fairly good sized rig.

So I sit down at the table and this guy that I hadn't even seen walks up from a table behind me. I had not even glanced at him. I thought it was going to be the usual "that's a nice camera" but he says, a little loudly but nicely "Excuse me...I'm camera shy. Please don't take a picture of me." I had to hesitate a bit before replying "Oohhhkaaay".

Since he was nice about it I just dismissed it, but of course after that it made me WANT to take his picture just to try to figure out who the heck he was.

Anybody ever have anything like this happen to you?

I would have asked why he thinks I would WANT a picture of him.

No I never pointed the camera anywhere near him (lens cover was on) and never even saw him until he walked up. He was alone and was very serious. In fact, my hesitation was to process whether he was joking or not. (It's the sort of thing I might jokingly say myself.) I started to say something like "I'll consider it" but since he wasn't coming at me with an attitude I figured I wouldn't make a scene. It just struck me as extremely weird.

I'm going to remember the America's Most Wanted bit ;^O.

Easy comeback (and one I probably would have said and PO'd someone): "Why the heck would I want to take a picture of you?"

That's when you needed one of the thermoses that looks like a 70-200 so that you could just say, "Oh that? That's just my tasty hot beverage."

So the guy is camera shy, but not so shy that he wouldn't go up to a stranger in a restaurant and say something like that? Crazy!
