Camping/cabins in East Texas - 03-17-2010, 01:43 PM

I need to go to Houston with the family to get some paperwork done this Fri morning and I am thinking of driving back thru the piney woods of East Texas and either camp or stay at a cabin in one of the national forests or parks in the area. I am thinking Dave Crockett, Angelina, perhaps visiting Lufkin and Crockett... but I am not familiar with the area at all.

Any suggestions on places to stay over night close to nature and places to visit? We'll spend Fri night and drive back home Sat afternoon.

Thanks!

I've often heard people admiring Lake of the Pines. It's popular, anyway. I've never camped in East Texas, though.

Fishing Lake O' the Pines
A nice choice indeed....but probably a little more north than Paco is considering. Just my guess.

The Rusk KOA Campground is not far from the Davy Crockett Nat'l Forest.
I've not stayed at this KOA yet, but I stayed at one of their "Kabins" at the one not far from Carlsbad and it was very nice.

Very quaint:

And basic accommodations inside:

Being a chain, they're fairly consistent from one to the other.

Paolo,

Do you really want to specifically stay in a "cabin"? If not, you can always stay in Lufkin or Nacogdoches. Both have very reasonable hotels and are not too far from where you're looking. And they're both on HWY 59 so you don't have to travel too far off the beaten path to get to lodging.

Guys, thank you for all the suggestions, I'll check them out.

I dont have a 400mm lens and, even if I did, I wouldn't know what to do with it

Crockett would get my vote. Wander around the old town center. I see motel billboards as I fly through.
There are places to rent on Lake Palestine. GOOGLE should know how to find them.
I travel between NW Houston and Hawkins a lot. All on state and farm roads. Lots of interesting things to see. Last weekend the pear trees & daffodils were in full bloom.
Have fun!

Huntsville St. Park is right off of I-40 and has screened shelters, tall pines, soft sandy hiking trails around a lake. Not a huge National forest mind you, but a nice little place IMHO.

I second this choice...I've tent-camped there a couple of times and always had fun. There used to be alligators in the lake there...not dangerous, but could be good photo opp.
