Planting Giant Pumpkins - 03-20-2010, 11:29 AM

I bought a package of Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds last night. "These huge, pink-orange, smooth skinned pumpkins can reach up to 400-500 pounds each." Now, I don't know what I would do with a 500 lb pumpkin, and I sure couldn't get it through the gates leading from my back yard. So, I'm thinking of putting them on the front lawn. Maybe that would also serve to advertise my fresh produce that I hope to sell?

What would you think if you drove through a neighborhood and saw a 6-foot, 500 lb pumpkin (or, a few of them) on someone's front lawn?

To be considerate of the other home owners around you, you should ask your neighbors how they would feel about it.

That's a good idea. I'm not out to cause trouble (I do it naturally).

LOL I understand that Richard. IMO, I think it would be neat to see something like that, but not my neighbors front yard.

The trick to growing them that large is remove all the blooms on a vine but one and set up a drip irrigation system on the vine. You can also grow 100lb+ watermelons that way.

Lived near Conrad Farms in Bixby, OK. They used that system and were for several years in the Guiness book of records for giant watermelons.

Oh grow them in your front yard to show your neigbors just how green you are.

Why? One should not be ruled by the narrowness of your neighbors world view, let a thousand flowers and giant pumpkins grow.

That's a good point Henry. We live across the street from a park and I see kids doing all kinds of crazy things.

I appreciate most of my neighbors, others, not so much.

That's someone's a hell of a gardener. It ain't that easy Richard. I wish you luck with all your gardening endeavors, but I'm afraid you're going to be in for a healthy dose of reality come summer.

Richard,
Your idea about traveling the world as a photographer was a much better idea!
