Cowboys Stadium camera question - 03-21-2010, 03:57 PM

I spent yesterday at Cowboys Stadium for the Supercross races. I took my D3 with an old 28-105 Nikon lens to stay under the 3" rule. My son had entered earlier than me with a D70 and an old Sigma 70-300 lens that is about 6". Security told him that if he detached the lens and put it in his backpack he could take it in.

My question is whether anyone had ever taken their body with no lens or a small lens and taken a 70-200 f/2.8 (or something similar) in a backpack and been allowed to enter. The whole thing just seems kind of pointless to me and I'm wondering what experiences others have had. It was my first time at the stadium and I probably won't be there for a while as a spectator, so its more curiousity than anything.

That is there rule. However I run a photography group and next Saturday we are having an event where you can take any equipment, lights, etc. This is a first and we are testing the waters. If it works out, this will be an exusive event for Ttge DFW Photography Group.

Here is the link for more information:

Hope you can make it.

When I went to a game last year, I saw security making several people return their camera to the car with lenses longer than 3". I got lucky in my lens choice and without the cap came right in at 3". I personally wouldn't take the chance. Other events, maybe but not a Cowboys game.

I think it does depend on the event. We went to one of the high school football playoff games last year, and there was one guy in the stands with a 300 mm lens ... on a tripod!
