Got a camera?

Nice and discreet: KT&C | KPC-S190CDV | $99

Slightly less subtle, but built-in SD-based DVR and motion sensor: GE Intellicorder Camera System - 45227 at The Home Depot

Full surveillance setups are pretty cheap these days, and would allow multiple angles (4ch DVR with four low-light cameras tends to be around $300) with audio, but they tend to be more obvious, and take more time to set up. Video of a baggie being exchanged for cash is probably enough to get the cops interested, but having audio of them arguing about the price and quality of the contents might speed things along.

Do you have a friend who is a cop and wants to come to your place for dinner?

I don't think you can legally record someone without them knowing. You might be the one who gets arrested when you take the video with audio to the authorities.

Lonnie,

It's not illegal to record someone without their knowledge. However, if you do, it is not admissible in court.

That's why you put a surveillance sign in your yard and have the cameras visible. Not only is it a deterrent, if it is visible and a sign posted there should be no problems, right?

I know you can keep tabs on your property as long as you can't see anyone else's property in the field of view. right?

It is the audio that might be illegal not the video. Before you do it just double check to be safe. I am not a lawyer but I am sure if you record audio in Texas you have to notify. I can record me talking to someone but I can't record 2 other people talking to each other. 1 party has to know. Where is an attorney when we need 1?

Recording their activities just seems like such a bad idea. Why do you want to get involved? There are entire families being slaughtered in Mexico right now over stuff like this. Let the authorities handle it and stay out of it. The last thing you want is a scorned drug dealer with a score to settle and your name on his mind.

"why do you want to get involved"

Because that is his home. I know what you mean, but he can be involved without raising the flag that says he did. This is what the PD is for. But you can't turn a blind eye to it or just up and move.
