I wonder how RatShack survived all these years, but apparently, they are doing good.
Last time i visited the empty store, they still offer 30 days return policy. If get sold to WorstBuy, i'm sure it would be gone. Hello 15% restocking fees! As I recall, Radio Shack got its start when its founder began collecting the rejected components from Texas Instruments and reselling them. The resisters, transistors, capacitors, etc. that he got were perfectly fine for hobbiests, though they did not meet the strict requirements that TI had to meet.

I remember back in 1979 when some engineers for a division of Mostek bought one of the Tandy Desk Top PC's (yes Radio Shack Made Desk Top Computers before Dell even existed). Well the thing just wasn't performing right for them and they decided to crack the case, hell they were electrical engineers dealing with electronics and semiconductors, and they found some of the worst quality control that they would have ever guessed for a high dollar component. They said that most of the sodder points were garbage with it even flowing over to other spots so they basically tore it down and cleaned it up manually and then they said it really was a slow machine until they threw in a card with a bunch of memory that they built out of Mostek components which got the thing running halfway decently for what they were wanting to use it for.
Radio Shack has always in my book had lousy quality control on their products but since they are cheap people still shop there. (my book by the way goes back to the 1960's when I looked at some of their things and just didn't like what I saw-I may buy a battery or a cable there but that is about it.)
But hey, Tandy has employed a lot of Texans over the years. Last year they were talking about moving out of Ft Worth but that has been settled when there lease was renegotiated a few weeks ago.
I really don't think that Best Buy will go after them since they killed off Circuit City around a year ago, they don't need all those small locations and other problems that would come with RS such as a gazillion leases to deal with.

In 1979, I was drooling over all the neat electronics in my Radio Shack catalog. I was thrilled to think of all the computing power I could have if I put together all the TRS-80 components to build their most powerful configuration. Alas, my family had no money!

Remember the days when their favored slogan was "You've Got Questions~~~We've Got Answers!"
I don't know where that Answer Dude was. I know that I never came across him!
All I ever found were prices that were a little too high, and stuffed white shirts wearing neckties that were about as sharp as my grandma's wooden butterknife.

Tandy had some nice stores for leather goods, tools, etc. Beyond that, they just plain suck.

I guess all of you must have been around the worst Radio Shack stores there were. The ones in this area were worth shopping at. I worked my way through college in one of the two RS's in my town. We were not stuffed shirts and we were not stupid. As for the quaility control, I never had a computer or any other big ticket item that I sold be returned because it was defective. I was there in the early 90's when there were Tandy (but not TRS series) computers and Radio Shack brand electronics on the shelves.
I do agree that the chain has gone downhill since then. It seems that RS is pushing cell phones more than anything else. If you want to get a part or a tool you have to rummage through the shelves in the back. Even the HDTV's in the local store are in a back corner. All of the gadgets I enjoyed going in for when I was younger are gone and the prices are extremely high on some items ($33 for a 6ft usb cable???).
