Homebrewers? - 03-28-2010, 01:13 PM

Anyone else on here happen to brew their own beer? I tend to take photos, lots of them, for any given brew day - and got to thinking if there were other photogs into brewing that might make an interesting combo. Throw together a brewday/bbq/photosomething. Thoughts?

I have been doing home brew for several years - currently have a dark Belgium Bock on tap and a Yorkshire Bitter in the fermentation stage. My neighbors have learned (the hard way) that my beer is significantly stronger than store-bought even if you can't "taste the alcohol".

Sure does. I just picked up a few 1gal carboys, stoppers, and airlocks to brew some small mead batches and experiment with SMaSH brews (single-malt, single-hop) to really get a feel for what each malt/hop character is really like on its own.

Indeed, I think the weakest beer I've brewed yet was 5.7% ABV. None of them last very long once the friends get wind that there's conditioned homebrew available. Right now I've got an.. umm.. Adventure Ale in primary. Was meant to be an Imperial IPA but...uhhh. Yeahhhhh. I dare say I totally missed gravity, and also have a ton of hops in there. I'll go ahead and give it a nice long secondary, and take a sample when I decide it's done. If it's drinkable, I'll keg it. If it's not, I guess maybe I'll use it to make a pot of chili or something.

LOL, I have had my neighbors ring the doorbell and hand me their glass/mug. Beer never gets old at my place - if I have a keg last more than 4 weeks, then there is something wrong.

I have been wanting to get into it for a few months now. I have a couple friends who are really into it, one is brewing every weekend and his brews are excellent, but he is at I20 and Geen Oaks (about 1.5 hours from me)... So I am always running off with a few bottles every time I make it down there.

I really wish I could talk myself into it. I have about 3 too many hobbies right now.

When I started brewing beer I was worried how long 5gal of beer brewed w no perservitaves was going to last. Thanks to the help of friends I have never had a problem with beer expireing on my shelf.

Pineapples are getting cheaper and better. Soon it will be time for my Pineapple Ale.

Such a true statement, but really I've got a friend who doesn't use any preservatives and he's had brews last well over a year w/o any problems at all.

I love to brew. I'm a partial-mash extract brewer mostly.

I haven't brewed in over a year, but I really need to get back into it. I guess I need to find a good local brewing supply store. I need new buckets and of course ingredients.

My best (I've brewed over 30 batches) was actually the toughest to brew, which was a black ginger lager. It was my first foray into cold fermentation, but it was definitely worth all the work - fantastic beer. I'd love to do it again but I lost my brew fridge, so I'd need to get another one before I could try it again.

Haven't done any lagering yet, my fourth ale is in secondary right now under the stairs. I'd love a fermentation locker/fridge, but for now a rubbermaid with a few gallons of water and a towel wrapped around a bucket/carboy does an excellent job of keeping things in the mid-60s/lower-70s. I'd take a fan to it if the temperature weren't so perfect in that closet as it is.

My next few will likely be 1gal SMaSH brews to build a base of knowledge on the character of various malts and hops, and their interactions with each other.

Todd, the home brew supplies store I go to is in Richardson - on Coit between Beltline and Arapaho. I don't know if there are any other suppliers closer to McKinney.

I made my first homebrew last year. Did a Fireman's #4 that went over well. Still need to do a 2nd brew. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I did hand alot out at work on friday.

Aha, that's good to know. I work at TI right at 75 and 635, so that's real close. Cool!
