Question Do Folded up Light Stands... - 03-30-2010, 04:46 PM

...fit in an overhead compartment on a puddle jumper?

I'm flying to Louisiana tomorrow evening, and I'm taking my gear. I can fit everything I need into my Slingshot 300AW... except for the lightstands. They wont fit in my duffle bag either.

Will they let me carry them on and put them in the overhead? They are just light duty, Impact stands, that are about 3 to 3 1/2 foot when they are folded.

loaded question. (pun intended).
Who knows if they'll let you ? It's up to the gate agent and then the flight crew. Put them in some sort of bag and if they won't let you carry them on you can gate check them. Don't wrap them up so they can't be inspected.

+1

If you have some of those collapsible chairs, they usually come with a nylon bag. Your light stands will fit nicely in the bag.

Even if you have to gate check the lightstand, it won't get busted up in the cargo area and you'll only be slowed by a few minutes waiting to retrieve it.

I have two Manfrotto Nano 001 (I bought them when they were Bogen 3373. They are the best for traveling without question.

Problem solved... when in doubt, borrow a HUGE international traveling suitcase on coasters from a friend... LOL I got the lightstand, the tripod, the Aurora lightbank reflector, and the Photoflex small softbox, along with 5 days worth of clothes, and 5 pairs of shoes in there... and if I can squeeze it in, I'm bringing the big softbox too... LOL

I've also got the AB800 in a Lowepro carry on, along with my Slingshot with all my lenses.

Get ready to have the loading crew steal your stuff!!! I checked an $80 leatherman that never made it to the baggage check. Some AA employee is walking around with a very nice multi-tool right now...
