Your chance to tell me where to go! - 03-31-2010, 11:01 PM

This weekend is my wife and my 28th wedding anniversary. We want to get away somewhere local (couple hours in the car). The main entertainment will be spending the day shooting interesting sites.

I was originally thinking Sherman after seeing the grunge downtown, but Sulpher Springs and Tyler look kind of interesting too.

We are up in McKinney. And have only been in Texas for 2 1/2 years, so many places are still new to us.

So please be nice and tell me where to go.

Thanks in advance.

Geez... Sherman is a wedding anniversary to you?!? You two are easy to please! How about Dublin or Fredericksburg??? Tyler might be an OK visit and I can't remember anything good or bad about Sulpher Springs.

Getting out of town where the kids cant call and say we want to go shopping, so we are dropping off the grandkids is the anniversary, just NOT being on call, also if I am in town we will have a customer with a system issue and I often get the call (live less than 2 miles from our datacenter) so then i work all weekend (not that I'm not answering emails between posting here even this late). So just being together and unreachable will be the gift.

I will check out Dublin and Fredericksburg - thanks

If you go the Dublin/Hico/Granbury/Tolar (all good areas to shoot) area route I can suggest the Windmill Farm B & B as a good place to stay for the night and some cool stuff to shoot. Have Ruby make some Cinnamon rolls for breakfast.

Wow lots of interesting ideas.

Dublin sounds interesting, especially the UFO's (my wife wants to see one, i just tell her to look up at a plane, cause it's flying and she cant identify it)

Captn - the panhandle is where we have spent many a weekend, getting to know it well. She has a sister in Clovis NM (the armpit of the world) and one in Amarillo, so almost every 6 weeks we make the trip up to Amarillo, then over to Clovis (holding your breath for that 90 minute drive is pretty tough, unless you like the smell of cow patties), but i have lots of shots of all the little towns through there.

Mark - Paris, that's an interesting idea. My youngest (son) is getting married in July an my wife and I are giving them a trip to Paris France as a wedding gift (3 kids, 2 girls, paid for their weddings, only fair since i am not paying for this one, that i pay for the honeymoon). So maybe so shots of Paris TX and a travel brochure might be a fun gag.

Thanks for all the ideas, i will look at everything you guys suggest.

Paris, TX = a fun gag. I was more serious about Jefferson though. Quaint and historic.

Don't confuse the OK panhandle with Tom's suggestion. 2 different regions .........and worlds.

Gainesville is pretty nice to visit. Historic homes and town square, antiques shopping, bed & breakfast options, even an outlet mall. There's a zoo, but I don't know if the elephant who tread water during a big flood is still alive or not. If you're into gambling head north across the border and give some money to the Indians. Head west on Highway 82 and check out some of the tiny towns, including Saint Jo (which isn't a ghost town but looks like one). Muenster has some cool little shops and German food.

I don't have any other suggestions about places to visit, but if I told my wife we were going on a photo safari for our anniversary, it might be our last anniversary. Was this her idea? If not you might ask her what she would REALLY like to do/go.

If you're interested in old, small towns and buildings, you can head south through Waco and get onto Texas 6. Reisel, Calvert and Hearne are all interesting examples of small town Texas in varying states of decay and restoration. Or you can keep heading down 6 to Bryan/College Station. There's a lot of construction on the Texas A&M campus right now, but there are also a lot of interesting photo opportunities (the Bonfire memorial looks to be a challenge to do it justice).

If you make it down to College Station, you can make the jog down to Washington on the Brazos if you have any interest in Texas history.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
