Thanks Badu - 04-01-2010, 11:34 PM

As soon as I watched the video (linked in another thread with Badu's name on it), I was worried something like this would happen:

Erykah Badu's naked video prompts call to toughen Dallas law | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Dallas News on Yahoo! | The Dallas Morning News

Do you see the part I'm talking about? The part where city officials talk about cracking down on shooting without a permit? Yup, it's bound to affect still shooters, too. I've only requested a permit for one shoot, which required an RV and a whole production team. Every other shoot has just been me, and assistant or two, and the subject(s) without any sort of permit. I go out on the city streets and sidewalks without much worry. Now we'll have to. Prepare to be hassled by police for not having a permit to shoot... maybe even get a ticket or go to jail.

What bothers me is that when something "bad" happens just once a whole lot of people immediately call for a new law! Shouldn't something have to be fairly common problem before going to the extreme of creating a new law?

I don't think any children saw that and if they did I don't think that they would be scared for life!

What bothers me is that there is likely a law or statute already on the books to cover something like this (pun intended)....

Um, public nudity perhaps.

I think she needs to record a duet with the dude from the billboard.

"What if there is a part two and we don't take some type of action or put it up for discussion and she comes out and really gets with it and does a Michael Jackson-type video and have 15, 20 people and all of them take their clothes off?"

Quick! Someone want to help me shoot a video tomorrow?

You (or any man) would be in jail and charged as a sex offender. Ticks me off that she only get's a slap on the wrist with disorderly conduct charge.

I saw the video and read very little on the matter...

Just curious did she get charged with anything? I would assume the fine is minimal compared to what she will make with this stunt....yes stunt....

But did she get even a small smack on the wrist?

News this evening said she'll be charged with "Disorderly Conduct" which is about a $500 fine.

Still don't understand the explanation of why they can't throw the public nudity charge at her.

Actually, you can see some kids in the background of the video. Children could see worse than a naked woman, but many parents wouldn't want their kids to be there, if given the choice.

There ARE laws about having permits to shoot. These permits would probably even allow you to shoot naked, if approved. The city doesn't really enforce the need for a permit, because stuff like this hasn't really happened in the past. Now the police will be asking for permits.

The City's permitting department liked to repeat the need for me to pay for a permit to conduct a nude shoot in Downtown Dallas, without necessarily stating following all the rules would make it OK. IMO, the City doesn't really care if someone walks naked down the street; the City cares about getting money.

Per law, a person who wants to conduct a nude shoot where someone out in the general public could be confronted by nudity (even if the shoot is located on private property) would need to pay for the permit (IIRC, about $250 or $300), hire the necessary security to seal off the perimeter and do a few other things that didn't really pertain to me. It is exactly the same rules that someone would have to follow to shoot a high-speed chase or a bank robbery in Downtown Dallas. The permit is permission to do something that is normally illegal, according to the Permitting Department.
