I've been volunteered to lead a hike and camp to Wimberley, TX. Originally, we were going to visit Blue Hole, but that is closed until Memorial Day. Now, I am thinking of visiting Jacobs Well and camping in Pedernales Falls State Park. Does anyone have any pointers?
Thanks. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Wimberley is about an hour away from Pedernales Falls State Park. From Wimberley, take RR12 north to Dripping Springs down a really winding road. Turn left on 290 and go west about 20 miles. At the PFSP sign, go 7 miles south to the entrance of the park. At that point, you are closer to 281 than to Dripping Springs.
I've been through Wimberley lots of times and I'm not aware of a place in town to camp. There are some private camps outside of town.
Pedernales Falls has lots of trails to hike, the falls itself, and a small river that should have water in it now. Pretty place, but not so big that you will feel lost in it.

Thanks for that information. I hadn't realized that the two locations are an hour's drive apart. The group organizer chose PFSP because she knows they will allow dogs, and our group has a lot of people who like to bring their dogs along.

Exercise extreme caution if you take off your shoes to walk/swim in the river at PFSP. I ripped open my heel on a piece of re-bar on a man-made rock in the river. Sooo not fun.

Yeah, we like water. I usually wear my water sandals until I'm convinced I know that what I'm going encounter won't hurt me.

Thanks. | I used to scuba dive in Jacobs Well back in the late 60's I don't even know if it's still open to the public anymore

My wife has an aunt who lives in Wimberley, it's a gorgeous place. Look for the pie shop in town, the blueberry pie is awesome!

Jacobs well is pretty well known as one of the most dangerous diving spots in the US. The caves have a loose gravel floor the shifts and traps divers, a lot of people have died there. Other than that it is a beautiful swimming hole.

I tried to make reservations at Pedernales Falls, but they are all booked up. They usually have primitive camps open, but I do not think dogs are allowed in the primitive campsites. It's best to call TPW to see if they even have any spots. I called and asked if they had any regular camp spots open for a weekend visit for the next 2 months, and they had none.
You might want to check some of the campgrounds near Canyon Lake. Quote:

Guadalupe River State Park is another small, but overlooked park. You might take a look there. It's off 46 and east of Boerne.
Or just to go TPWD.org? and look around.

Wimberley Cafe. Saturday morning. Breakfast and bike watching. A great way to spend a nice morning. West of Wimberly you'll find Blanco. And the Lavender Festival and camping along a river.

They were dying in it back then too...it's an adventure I'll never forget... I/we made over a dozen dives in two years and each one was different. I could why people got killed in it every year it's not for divers without experience and a lot that have died were inexperienced.

The way the gravel shifts on the cave floors is so unpredictable its easy buried, panic, and not make it back out until your a bloated carcass... I still would love to dive there but I am no where near experienced/ballsy enough to chance it.

You can camp at Blanco State Park in Blanco, I do not know about dogs. Also about 5 miles out of Wimberley is Storm Ranch that allows camping only $15. They have over 6000 acres you can explore. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
