I can't believe they would do that to someone who died for their right to be so stupid!

Part of me supports the right of all Americans to protest and another, more vocal part of me would have a hard time keeping a .45 holstered if I ran across these bozos......Ben

it is cutting close to religion and politics... so I will try to tread carefully.

My personal wishes would be that the Phelps family and Westboro B Church disappear.

I hope that the supreme court gets it right.

I will stop here because every single response that I can think to type would inflame a discussion on this board that would go against the wishes of the owner.

That is said much less divisively than I could come up with on my own.

My personal disdain and hatred for a speech should not prohibit it from being said.

Through the chaos and disorder of the protest by this group, they bring a unity and reverence to the ceremony that would not otherwise be recognized. The patriot guard was born from these events, and I think that is a good thing. Civilian citizens showing their respect for fallen soldiers, and letting the family know what kind of great country they live in. Free speech is a powerful thing and should not ever be abridged.

Being prior military myself, my husband a veteran of the Navy and my son currently serving in the Navy on the USS Lincoln, I should probably refrain from stating my opinion. I'm assuming most can guess what it would be concerning this. Stating so on my own would probaby get me banned.

I completely agree with free speech but it seems like, out of respect to the human race, a funeral would be off limits. Military or not.

...I've wrote many things and deleted them LOL
I'll just say, I was a Navy wife for 10 years and I'm sorry that they have to deal with the protesters. If I could help stop them I would.

my husband is looking to join the combat vet motorcycle club, they all ride next the procession with large American flags to attempt blocking the protesters. The sound of hundreds of motorcycles drowns out the crowd of Flippin %^&*($( okay I am

Burning flags is less offensive than those nutjobs. If ever there was a case against the freedom of speech, this is it.

I fell confident the most of us know that these proclaimed religious folks do not speak for for the deity they allegedly represent nor do they follow the teachings of the book associated written by the followers of Deity.

(this comment was written this way to avoid direct religious commentary)

I bought a knife a little over 10 yrs ago to kill Fred Phelps over his protest at the funeral of Matthew Shepard I was a total wreck, having just talked to Matthew two weeks earlier, and I have come to my senses). I was too late to the services, but carry the knife as a reminder to never be a victim.

I STRONGLY support free speech, to me the phrase, " I may not agree with you, but will fight to the death for your right to say it", is one of the most fundamental bases of this country. It just sickens me that we have to endure people like him. I don't really know how to say this, he has to be considered part of what is commonly called the "religious right", but hopefully they can even see what a nut case he is.

I think I read it was going for appeal and I sure hope the family wins, I had only seen glimpses of this on the news the other day and didn't really understand what the Phelps were even protesting. It seems like they just hate everything and anything and justify it thru strange biblical interpretations

In a rare class act by Bill O'Reilly, he has offered to pay these legal fees.
