Question Hey I.T. guys... - 04-07-2010, 12:02 PM

A year ago I had installed GIMP on my laptop, which has a built in wireless card. Right after the install I got the blue screen of death, T-total crash, and apparently blew the card up... or so I thought. So I installed an external USB wireless adapter and have been using that since.

Flash forward 6 months, around August something happened and the internal wireless card decided to work... but only for three days and then it shut down again. So I plugged the USB adapter back in and kept using it.

Today, I get a message that the 'windows wireless assistant' is turned on. So I flipped the switch on my internal wireles card, and low and behold its working again. We'll see how long it lasts before I have to plug in the USB adapter again.

My question, is what could be causing this? The card, and wireless assistant has been 'enabled' in my devices the entire time. And i've uninstalled, and reinstalled the driver from the MS site multiple times.

Just curious. Have you gotten any error messages indicating an addressing conflict? Something like 2 apps trying to access the same address simultaneously? Also, check your GIMP preferences to see if there is a wireless setting that can be toggled off. My 2 cents worth.

Uninstall the driver software that came with your card. plug the card in and let windows see it and try and install the software. Do not run the cards software, instead go into the control panel and update driver, browse to the CD and manually load the drivers. Don't load the software.

See if that works.

As for Gimp, when it blue screens, what does it say....that is the first step to take.

Nope. I mean a closed system where you don't have to worry about which driver conflicts with some other software while dodging every exploit know to smart mouthed script kiddies.

Sorry, but I'm not taking your bait...

Although I put emoticons in my post, I actually was being serious. One of the main advantages to the Mac platform is it's closed nature. Microsoft's so called 'certified' drivers are rarely put through anywhere near the testing that Apple code receives simply because there are so many combinations in the vanilla PC world. You just don't see the sort of issue Chris is having on the 'other side'.

And I'm still not taking the bait for a PC vs Mac argument...

And my point is that the OP came on here for help with the problem outlined, and you tell Christopher to get a new system. Sometimes it's not that easy. Who started it?
