Parking Ticket SNAFU - 04-09-2010, 03:00 PM

It is not my intent to look down on any law enforcement officer here. Personally I believe most have common sense which doesn't appear to be the case in this story, if we are to believe the article as written.

The question is, when you park, how long should you have to get the meter paid and running?

Several months ago I wanted to get some shots of the Dallas bus station. I parked right in front of the place and shot some from my car. Then I decided I wanted to get a couple of different angles. No prob, I'll just jump out real quicky and get what I need without putting money in the meter. ............Um, no, ....... let's be honest, so I drop a dime in the meter.... 10-12mins. more than enough right?. I shoot a few from the corner, then straight on, then cross the street for some close ups. Done. Look over my shoulder and I'm being ticketed. Time flies when you're having fun, but this is ridiculous. I drove straight to City Hall and challenged it, showing the guy the images from my camera asking "How long could this had taken?" I ended up getting a notice in the mail that I didn't have to pay. Yeah Dallas!

Before reading the letter I felt sure it had to have happened in Chicago, a city notorious for collecting parking fines. The meters there are actually maintained by a for profit company, much like the red light cameras we all know and love. If the ticket had actually been in Chicago I am sure the officer would have gotten the raise as well as reprimands sent to all other officers about there poor performances in comparison.

Just wait until major cities begin "outsourcing" or "privatizing" law enforcement. You can look forward to rent-a-cops having financial incentives for producing higher citation numbers.

it's not about enforcement, it's about revenue collection.

what do you think red light tickets are?

as a matter of fact, I remember last year a lawsuit being brought against a company who installed the cameras in a major metropolitan area in TX in regards to their legality.

Yes Richard,
I remember just watching a news article on the yellow light times being set fast at some camera intersections to increase ticket issue.
