Red River was okay, but no academy award winner. Shading my opinion is the fact that I have never liked Montgomery Clift, who gets second billing in this flick. One saving grace is that it does have Walter Brennan, who I do like. Both my wife and I thought the movie was hokey overall, and not one of Wayne's best. It also stars many of the best supporting actors, and John Wayne regulars, to ever grace a western, such as Harry Carey, Harry Carey Jr., Noah Beery Jr., Hank Worden, etc.

I liked Red River as it is very old school. My favorite John Wayne movie is "The Shootist" followed by "True Grit."

While I enjoyed all but one of his movies, my favorite is "The Quiet Man." The fire between Wayne and Maureen O'Hara coupled with the comedy. Stands as one of my favorite movies of all time.

The Yello Ribbon trilogy is good if you can find it in b&w.

His worst was playing a Mongol aka Genghis Kahn, stinks up the screen to high heaven.

Red River is actually a decent western with a nice TEXAS theme! I guess you guys know that Walter was an Academy Award Winner.

Yep, Walter won three Oscars, and was nominated for a fourth.

I liked the Texas theme of Red River just fine, but it had other issues for me. The Duke didn't look natural made up to look older, Both female parts were overplayed as much as any I can recall. Neither was believable, IMO. I saw the movie when it first came out. However, that was 52 years ago, and it didn't leave a lasting impression on me like "Sands of Iwo Jima" did, so it wasn't favorite of mine even back then.

Whelp, this is one of those times that if you don't get it then explaining it is probably not worth the effort. No flames from here.

I think my is Rio Bravo with John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson and of course Walter Brennan. Love most of John Wayne movies though.

Picking one over the others ain't easy, in fact, I'm not sure that I could. However, Rio Bravo would certainly be among the finalists on any short list of mine.
