Hadn't seen the news yet this afternoon, but it is a tragedy on so many levels. The loss of life, serious injuries to survivors, damage to the environment as well as damage to the rig and other costly equipment. So sad.

still looking for 11 people in the water (they hope).
I guess this is first offshore platform to burn up and sink in a long time if it isn't the first of the modern ones to do that.

i care.

and don't confuse a platform with a rig.

apparently, they filed for a permit to TA with the MMS on the 16th. Word I have from the inside (at a different major and drilling engineering) is they were trying to pump cement to TA. Rig zone said they found everyone yesterday...but that apparently wasn't true. Unfortunately, those 11 are most likely goners...

I had heard it was listing, but that it wouldn't sink. I guess they said that about a ship long ago too. Mother Nature has a way of not knowing what can't be done. Earth Day?

I know nada of these things. Is this something they can raise later, or is this new reef?

Andy:
Good question. I know that after Katrina it was like a big junk yard out in the Gulf and lots of stuff was towed to deeper water. I asked my son what he has heard. He says that the rig will probably have to be removed to I guess they will bring it back up. Plus I am sure they will want to finish drilling here too.

If it weren't in 5,000 feet of water, maybe it could be lifted in small chunks. We're currently building a heavy lift marine system that will pick up 10,000 tons. The Deepwater Horizon was substatially heavier than that. Unfortunately, our equipment can't begin to go that deep. It all depends on the mood of the government. If they demand that the sea floor be cleaned up so as not to offend whatever it is that lives that deep, it will have to be cut up into small chunks. I'm not sure if there is any hardware around that could bring up sizeable portions from that depth.

So very sad on so many levels. Anything can sink.

ps: We are still collecting debris from the bottom of the Gulf as a result of Ivan, Katrina & Rita and will be a few more seasons.

my hope is the riser and rig didn't land on top of the well. if that's the case...they'll have to drill a relief well. or that the riser didn't rip off the bop's. major issues.

i doubt they will ever have to recover this. it's hard to understand the size of this thing.
