Condemned Utah killer will face firing squad - 04-23-2010, 04:17 PM

By JENNIFER DOBNER, Associated Press Writer Jennifer Dobner, Associated Press Writer – 16 mins ago

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah is set to execute a convicted killer by firing squad in June after a judge agreed Friday to the inmate's request for the method, renewing a debate over what critics see as an antiquated, Old West-style of justice.

you can read the rest of the article here.

Just curious, if you had to choose a way to die, what would you pick? The choice does not have to be penalty related. Think more along the lines of terminal disease, or hell, why not, penal system or terminal disease. What say you?

I'd like to die in my sleep like my grandpa. Not screaming in terror like the three passengers in his car.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. It was the perfect set up.

Well, I was not going to read thru all of those 733 posts to JENNIFER DOBNER's story as to if any of them corrected her understanding gap of the history behind the practice. It is not "Old West Style", or "Antiquated" because it uses a firing squad, but rooted in the people of Utah's religious understandings and beliefs about the Bible teaching of the spilling of blood and the remission of sin. So it's certainly not about a "blaze of glory".

Don't go turning this into something religious, or whether or not the state's people made a accurate interpretation of the passages in question. It is not. It just a statement of the history behind the practice. Something lost on people too often.

Cool. Save money on the antiseptic swab for the lethal injection.

Hahahahaahaha!!

As for the topic:
A small part of me thinks thats pretty old school and I thought we as a country were above such a method, but a much larger part of me thinks that's bad @ss and we should do it more often.

Embrace that side of you that you may be at peace with your heart and the practices in Texas.
The killer could have "voted with his feet" and chosen to disregard life in another state that would preserve his life. But he didn't. Oops. But I support his choice now.

I also am perfectly willing to allow my fellow citizens who differ with the views of Utah to vote with their feet and live in another state with different practices. This was something our founding fathers understood and fully supported and for which they provided.

I am thinking that the first death sentence carried out in the US after the Supreme Court reinstated it was in Colorado by a man named Gary somethingand he wanted a firing squad... I also think there was something to the effect that there were several people in the firing squad and one gun carried a blank. The blank was put in so that each person in the squad could think, if the so desired, that they were the one with the blank. This may have just been an urban legend.

I was off topic...sorry. The article, laden with flaws, overshadowed your question.

How would I choose to die? I guess I'd prefer to die in my sleep, away from the battle of the day. Taking no one else with me. But after the death of those who love me.

Gary Gilmore

I have a few ways I don't want to die, that's for sure. But, regardless, however it may come, I just hope I'm not there when it happens.
