Dallas - Garden Cafe - 04-25-2010, 06:48 AM

I just watched a short clip on the channel 5 news about Garden Cafe in Dallas. I wanted to know more because the news states that it is a dog friendly restaurant.

However, upon checking out their website, it appears that it is a pretty popular place for photography shows. The word 'photography' is mentioned MANY times on their website, and it claims that the cafe is a very popular place for local photographers, outside of the shows.

Have any of you been there, or attended a show held there?

As a side, the highlight of the restaurant during the news story, was that the restaurant grows all of its own food in its gardens. All the veggies are organic, and they even make their own compost/fertilizer from biodegradable ingredients. It looks like a really interesting place.

I have never been, but after reading about it, I would like to go. This sounds like a great place.

Hell I live within walking distance of the place and never knew it existed, will have to go by later today and see what all is there. One sad thing is that they don't even have their address on their home page. I also saw that news clip and was wondering where they were.

In the same Neighborhood is York Street, York Street Dallas it is a bit pricey but man the food is top notch and it is small-seats around 40 people but I would stack it up against anything in the State if not Southwest.

I vote for York Street also. I have not been there in several years but it was great when I went. I love the area too. East Dallas has lots of charm. Great find on the Garden Cafe. Ill have to try it also.

Another out of the way place is the Hari Krishna Restaurant at their temple, very good vegetarian dinner/lunch at a reasonable price. Welcome to Kalachandjis - Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurant in Dallas, TX

I drove by there yesterday, they were closed at the time, and they are in a 1920's era small commercial building (5 spots in it) right across the street from a small triangle park with a playground. It looked like they made use of the land behind the building to put in the "garden" and it looks like there is some outdoor seating there also. There is ample parking still also. May have to check it out later this week. (less than 1/2 mile from the house so may just walk there)

I live a few blocks from Garden Cafe and walk up there for breakfast sometimes on the weekend. I had actually talked to them a year or so ago about exhibiting my photography and they said yes, they would call me to schedule dates, but I think the manager I talked to left and never passed along the info to the owner. Guess i should go back sometime and revisit the issue. Garden Cafe serves a good breakfast and lunch - it is by no means in the same universe as York Street in terms of menu or atmosphere and isn't meant to be (but I, too, give big props to tiny but mighty York Street - and Deep Ellum's Local - for consistently excellent food). Garden Cafe is comfort food - good breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, etc. Seems like a neighborhood hangout on the weekends - the kind of place you take your Saturday or Sunday paper and read over breakfast (although I wish they had better coffee - that's one area they could improve). They do rotate art/photography every few months and have had some interesting exhibits. Next time I get an invite to one, I'll post it in case others want to come check it out.
