Frustration OR The Moving [dog] Blues - 04-27-2010, 10:13 AM

My wife and I are relocating to the northeast San Antonio area from College Station and have been looking for a 2/2 or 3/2 house to rent for the next year. We have found several properties that fit our needs, with one small caveat: none of the leasing agents or owners are willing to let us have a 70lb AmStaff-mixed breed dog. Haley is one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet: she is great around children and FedEx folks alike.

We are at our wits end. I don't want to lie about her (i.e., say she's a lab mix) because I think it will just cause us more trouble down the road. Giving her up isn't an option either.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

A family friend suggested that I show the leasing agent a picture of Haley. I don't want to make it look like I'm concerned as to whether or not they will allow her, though. Maybe I'll take a picture of her with us to the showing and have it available if he asks for it.

On another note (not Haley)...

I have two labs mixed with pit bulls. My black lab/pit mix is now 13 years old and the only person he has ever tangled with he was defending my daughter and I. Someone jumped the fence and attempted to break into our house. My daughter was 1 at the time. He put 36 stitches in the mans arm when he opened the back door.

Two out of three of my kids have cut their first teeth on his ears. He would lay on the couch with them and they used to gum his ears. (I know gross!) I did my best to deter it. . . and never could break the habit until they got their first tooth in.

Your sweet baby could easily pass as a lab mix. No one knows their dogs better than the owners. I love both of mine dearly. . . and know they are the right choices for our family.

Has anyone suggested a meet and greet with the dog? Sometimes they will make a exception on case by case.

I completely agree.

That being said, I understand the concern that owners have when renting properties to people with so-called "aggressive" dogs and the insurance premiums that come with them. I'm happy to see that a couple of you think she looks a bit labbish, though.

Poor little girl.

I'm glad you're not willing to give her up. I hate people that do that.
