Yeah, they should only ask for non-exclusive rights from the winners. I understand why they do it, so they can use your winning pics in the ads and promotions for future contests without paying you again. However, the people who didn't win shouldn't be forced to give away rights for nothing.

Yeah YOU Pay for them to have basically unlimited rights to reuse your photos pretty much in anyway that they want, but they will get submissions because people just won't read before submitting.
There are a couple magazines out there that are like that also, I've had my family ask me why I didn't submit anything to them for publication and I point out the facts.

Most contests are becoming these right grabbing events nowadays.
Think about it, for $4000(Actually much much less/free, esp if you factor in the entry fees) they are basically getting a large pool of "professional" grade photography for which they can use any way they see fit.
What a deal! | | | |

With people PAYING to submit photos they may actually net their labor costs to build this collection of works that they have free rights in any current or future publication that they operate or affiliate with.
So always READ the FINE PRINT!

That all may be true, but for the up and coming who wants to get their photos exposed, they don't have many other options.

This doesn't guarantee you anything other than you giving them all the rights to use the photos at anytime in the future with no compensation to you.
Really a good online portfolio with proper key words may be seen by more people all over the world than this magazine, so spend that submission fee on a website where you retain your rights.

I only really look at a couple of the forums. Open Talk, Equipment, Lighting, Business and Wedding and the People/Wedding/Sports galleries.
Getty Images searches Flickr for photographers and photographs.
Local small newspapers and magazines are always looking for people to take pics on the cheap.

I never enter contests, for exactly this reason. I resent that, for a negligible amount of money, a major publisher gets hundreds of the best images people can produce, free for the publisher to use any way they desire. But, I thought that I was in the minority, as it seemed that most other photographers consider this simply the price of entry into the field. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
