Personally... my fave way was this.

Be the best photographer on staff at the newspaper, by far and away... realize that you are never going to be the photo editor and be relegated to nights and weekends because the editor above you with half the talent has been at the paper for 20 years... then quit, leaving him as the only staffer.

Worked for me. I haven't heard a word, email or call since from anyone at the newspaper in more than a year other than my friend who was a college friend before the paper.
