I installed the latest version on a HP Pavilion a6019h computer with Vista. The install went fine and dual boots with Vista but it works for a few minutes then freezes. Vista works fine with no problems.
I have googled for an answer with no success. Anybody have any suggestions?

The computer must not be compatible since I even did a clean install on the entire disk.
It does however work fine on my laptop..

Instead I decided to install Ubuntu on my laptop. Install went smooth and is working fine. I'll probably build a custom desktop and install it to that and get rid of the HP.

What kind of freeze, does the system just stop being responsive, does the mouse pointer continue to move? If you hit ctrl alt backspace does it restart X and go back to the login window?

I downloaded Ubuntu again thinking the first dl might be bad. Still freezes.
I downloaded Kubuntu and have run the live CD for nearly 2 hours on the same computer with no problems whatsoever..
Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same version except for the addition of the KDE desktop..
So what gives???
Ubuntu won't work but Kubuntu will... I don't get it..

You may want to consider Xubuntu or even Linux Mint which has a Kubuntu version and should soon have their latest Xfce version ready.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the computer has compatibility issues with the gnome desktop..
I do like the KDE desktop better than Gnome.

What version did you install?
Some people have reported issues on laptops with the latest version (10.04). You may want to do a fresh install of the previous version (9.10).
ETA: Ok, just read your last post. Sounds like it was just gnome. Odd, KDE is usually more problematic than gnome. KDE is prettier though. :)

We have a couple of Dells at work that are running 10.04 with no problems. You should also have at least 512MB of ram. 1GB is preferred. Quote:

Even did all of the updates without a glitch.

You can always try restarting gnome now that you've updated everything. You can switch over to the command-line screen (ctrl-alt-f1) and stop kde (/etc/init.d/kdm stop --iirc) then start gnome (/etc/init.d/gdm start --iirc). I'm not no my ubuntu box, so I think the kdm and gdm are correct. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
