Walmart and Copyright--getting it right this time. - 05-16-2010, 01:25 AM

I went in to the local Wal Mart (249/Spring Cypress) to pick up a picture and ended up in line behind a gal who was trying to pick up some pictures.

The lady behind the counter took the envelope and told the woman "I can't sell these to you...they're copyrighted..." She opened the envelope and there were probably 20 pictures with a big watermark along the bottom. Being nosey, I tried to look at the name of the photographer to see if it was someone on here, but I couldn't quite see it. The Wal Mart employee explained that since those pictures were copyrighted, she couldn't sell them. She said it wasn't worth her job. Apparently they recently had an employee sell some copyrighted pictures and that employee had to do a pretty heavy-duty carpet-dance just to keep his or her job. It sounds like the word is getting out there, at least at this Wal Mart...

The customer didn't look too bright. I don't think she really understood why she couldn't get the pictures.

And no, I don't use Wal Mart for my serious printing...I needed a quick 4x6 and didn't want to waste the ink in the printer...

I have a release on file at the walgreens on fry/529 for my own stuff. First time they printed some quick 4x6's for me, it was written right across the envelope - "pro shots, release required"

Thankfully I thought ahead and printed one out.

Ohhh I loath walmart employee's. Kudo's for getting a copyrighted picture right but maybe a little more training for pictures that do not have a © or even logo.

I now have releases on file for all the places when I need some quickies.

I had some printed one time at Walgreens a while ago with MY watermark on them and it took forever to get them to sell them to me! I had to show them my drivers license and show them my name/initials matched my watermark! Guess they're doing their job!

Walmart's photo policy is a mess. Each untrained, idiot employee can arbitrarily decide that in their opinion an un-watermarked photo simply looks too good to be shot by you and refuse to give you a print.

So did the lady just walk over to to self serve kiosk an print them up there? Or did she just buy a printer and print as many as she likes at home? Is Walmart going to refuse to sell her a printer? Walmart could care less about photogs. They're just protecting their own a$$.

You must live right next to the walmart, or you probably spent a buck in gas vs. $.25 in ink and paper.

I had some printed there the other day for some test shots I did and she refused to sell them to me until I showed her my memory card with all of the f'd up pics I had from the same shoot.

My Wally world asked for the same thing. They have a form that you fill out behind the counter. Sign and walk away.

See, different WMs, different employees, different policies. That's so jacked. Either require everyone to fill out a form or no one.
