AT&T DSL question - 05-23-2010, 09:42 AM

I have AT&T standalone DSL (no home phone) with the Motorola modem which only allows me to connect 1 computer. Anybody know of a good modem/router combo that I can connect more than 1 computer to that works with this service or am I stuck having to get one from AT&T?

I'm thinking most of the ones available will work and for sure I would not reccomend the Two wire brand. I'm on my second and definately will go with someone else upon it's demise.

I have AT&T DSL and the modem they supplied me with (umpteen years ago) only has one RJ-45 connection to PC.

I plugged a Linksys Wireless N router into the DSL router and boom, problem solved.

Any router will work. In addition, many routers have a built in firewall that helps protect you against attacks.

I have 2 routers from when I was using standard DSL with a home phone but after dropping my home phone and going with standalone DSL I was never able to get my wired router to work with the modem. I just connected the wireless router and it works fine so problem solved.

I haven't dropped the phone service yet though I am considering it and going with naked dsl. Question when you dropped the phone service did they change the dsl modem or was it the one you started with?

They sent me a new one. My old one was a Westell which was not compatible with standalone DSL.

I have a Linksys 610N that is working great on my DSL. They just released new models, but be sure to find one with gigabit ethernet ports.

call AT&T and see about getting an updated router? When I got U-verse a couple of years ago they brought me out a router/modem with I think 6 jacks on the back, and it was wireless

I like Belkin routers, but I second calling them first for an updated router. DSL has gotten to be A LOT easier to deal with since the early days. I remember early DSL modems required you to log in with software or set up your router for a ppoE log-in if you wanted it to always be on. Now they come as a package and unless you're trying to do something really fancy are easy to set up. At my mom's house (not AT&T) the tech support guy could even go into the router and change settings remotely.
