They do that so that it will ring up in more searches. Some people list a max price but no min price. So therefor if you put in $800 as your max and you want to sell the item for more than that then it won't list in the search. Just a marketing tactic.

is $1000 not a fair price to ask for a used one? I don't get the problem, but I don't buy nikon, so maybe I'm missing something...

No, $1000 is not going to happen. More realistically, you're looking at a rock-bottom minimum of around $1375 with a more realistic price being around $1450... for a good copy of the VR I version.

The list price for a new VR I is $1799... but is discontinued. The list price for the new VR II version is $2399.

Didn't someone just sell a VR I in the buy/sell section for $1200? I've seen them dip down into the 12's once or twice, or at least I thought I did. There are always a bunch listed on FM.

Wow! Really? I haven't seen them dip that low yet. It doesn't affect me... but it's interesting to see them go for that amount.

I bought my first canon 70-200mm 2.8L for $600, used it for a couple years and then sold it for $600. It was really beat up when I got it, but those things last forever. I suppose someone could have a really worn VR lens that could go that cheap, but the quality lenses seem to hold their value pretty well...
